He was later arrested. This came after Ali had made three separate appeals to have his draft status changed because of what he called his non-violent Muslim faith and membership in the Nation of Islam. Ali's boxing career spiraled out of control after his arrest, with the New York State Athletic Commission suspending his boxing license and the World Boxing Association stripping him of his world heavyweight title. This banned him from boxing in the United States. His "Non-violent Muslim Faith". Really now. And of course we all know what a non-violent person Ali himself was. The problem is that we all cannot come to a consensus on the mechanisms based on the politics. We on the left scream "yeah!" when a Rush Limbaugh boycott is arranged, but yell "boo" when others want to boycott the NFL. And that is definitely vice-versa. The right thinks it is horrible to boycott a baker who refuses to bake a cake for a gay couple based on their religious beliefs, but have no problem wanting Abdul-Rauf out of the league for expressing his. I say, take the national anthem out of sports and we'd all be better off. All of this has come about due to the culture wars- it has nothing to do with Obama and Trump, but everything to do with a movement that continues to grow- more people of color, and alternate lifestyles, in the U.S. Obama just brought it into the spotlight and emboldened more African-American citizens to take a stand (simply by being black), while Trump is emboldening more black / Hispanic / gay people to take a stand due to his rhetoric.

Are you saying someone has to be an anti-American racist piece of $%!& to be a civil rights advocate? I don't believe that is right. I certainly do not believe that about Martin Luther King, who is someone whose civil rights work that I admire. But that is certainly what Muhammad Ali promoted himself as.
