That would be an improvement over what we have had, but I am hoping for more. Several of the historic NFL QB's didn't have rocket arms.
I think the problem with his passes, isn't necessarily a slower release, allowing the DBs to make a jump on the ball... But more that it's obvious he's going to his first read, which makes it easy for a DB to see where Watson is looking. As far as mechanics, I didn't mean that Watson's mechanics are on par with Brady, I was just referring mostly to Watsons release time and point of release being okay. I think the issue with Watson has more to do with his footwork than with his throwing motion...when he fixes that, his velocity and accuracy should improve. We'll see.
Off the playing field, I like how he handled the potential controversy with Savage. "Nothing but love between Tom and me." Very impressive young man. BoB threw him the extra challenge of wasting the offseason with no reps with the ones? No problem. He will work to overcome whatever is in front of him. Watch his combine preparation video with his QB mentor. What goals did he set for himself? -Starter -- check Against all odds of his HC saying Tom was the starter, he won it by halftime of 1st game! His two other goals: -Playoffs (he initially said 'Superbowl' but his QB mentor said aim at playoffs first) -ROY Wow! The kid has lofty goals. So much confidence. Not saying he will reach those last two but he has already accomplished the first one, in the process winning his HC over. It will be fun to see how it all plays out this year.
I gotta admit, before the tweets loaded, this is what I thought your post said, and I thought it was related to him hanging out with that washed up film hooker.
If the game slows down for Deshaun he could be a Russell Wilson/Aaron Rodgers hybrid. Doubt he'd get to Rodgers level but could see him equal Wilson. Sorry Bobs but Alex Smith ain't making that run. Deshaun already with the most memorable QB play in Texans history lol.
Long way to go but I do like the Russel WIlson comparison. There first few games look eerily similar. QB's are such a crap shoot long term, but there has been some real good film from Watson showing he can be lethal with his arm. He even got to show it off a bit against a good bengals defense at times.
Watson would have been caught too without some amazing down field blocking by 3 different players. Watson runs a 4.66 40, Smith ran a 4.7, they are strikingly similar QB's
It just happened to be the perfect storm for Watson huh. I wish Savage could have that perfect storm sitiation in live season games. For some reason it just doesn't pan out like that.
For him to get the TD? Yeah.....I mean, obviously. There's no argument otherwise. I went back and looked at the play, without stellar blocking down field, he'd have been down right about the 35, so yes, it was the perfect storm for it to lead to a TD there. That said, his athleticism put him in the position to have that scenario present itself. I do like the laughably ridiculous comment about Savage as if anyone was suggesting that he could pull off a run like that or if showing that a pocket QB can't run like that proves any point. Replace Watson there with Alex Smith and it's still a TD if the same decision was made with the same blocking....and that was my point which I think you missed on purpose.
