Well, that's it. I refuse to watch any games Ken Giles pitches in for the remainder of the time he is an Astro (sarcasm meter up the absolute ****ing highest it can possibly go)
And that is because failure as a whole carries so much weight, per say if you got 4 tests, and scored 100 on 3 but a 50 in another; You'd be a slightly better than average student with an 87.5 average. Although having 3 perfect scores can make you feel elite, the perception is different from the reality. I agree that Giles has improved a lot, and is a better pitcher. I think he will likely be in the elite closer conversations soon, and it might be sooner on the national level than the local level.
Based on Giles save percentage, he would successfully convert 8 out of 9 saves in the playoffs. I'll take it.
Jeter. Most overrated shortstop -- especially defensively. He pulled the Raffy Palmeiro skill of winning to gold gloves without actually playing good defense into a science. Granted, I would have loved a Caminiti-Jeter-Biggio-Bagwell infield for a decade. Stupid Phil Bevin draft pick is what separated us from being truly elite in the 90s.
Giles' fastball command the last couple months has been sublime. It has been and always was the key to him being an elite closer.
Happy 27th birthday Ken Giles. Some people never will (the seeds been planted), but I trust you. Or at least I trust you as much as any closer we've ever had, which isn't much. Closers by their job description come into tight games, so you rarely feel great about it. Unilke others I realize the Mariano Riveras of the world are rare, and even they blow games.
I pray to God our lineup keeps doing this. Because if it’s on Giles I’ll be shocked if we come out on top. I know. I know. He was amazing vs Oakland in games that were low pressure. It’s different when the lights are brightest. We can’t let it come down to Giles.
Yeah, he's been terrible this season in pressure situations. 2nd best closer in the AL is just not good enough.
Since the All Star game Kimbrel - 31.1 innings, 12 saves, 2 blown saves, 1.72 ERA, WHIP around 0.900 Giles - 30.1 innings, 15 saves, 2 blown saves, 1.19 ERA, WHIP a tad bit under 1.00
