If Watson really is a descendant of James Watson, the answer to the question about his DNA is answered, but the question as to who ithe black momma was that infiltrated the Watson family tree remains unanswered to this day.
I just don't see it. In terms of personality/leadership maybe as both are noted for being strong leaders (though Wilson has lost a lot of shine with his teammates) and obviously both are athletic black quarterbacks. However, Wilson's scouting report was that he was accurate with a very strong arm and could put touch on deep throws. He had good footwork and always kept his eyes downfield looking to make the pass. The only reason he wasn't a first round pick is because he was small. Watson's issues are all of Wilson's strengths. Inaccurate on the deep ball (note that last night they got his accuracy up by only throwing quick, short routes), doesn't keep his eyes downfield, lacks velocity on his throws (about 10mph slow than Wilson), etc. Now yes, a lot can be fixed with footwork improvements, I just don't think they are very similar players beyond their athleticism and likeability factors. Watson's upside is very high but I just don't think he'll ever be the same type of thrower that Russell Wilson is.
I laughed at that comment. 5-8 rushes a game are fine. He is better off doing that then sitting in the pocket with this OL. That Geno Atkins hit had me worried. Glad the kid got back up.
I joked in the game thread that I broke my hip just watching that hit. XSF and Mancz weren't even a speed bump for Atkins.
Thanks guys, I guess you're right about it being the velocity and not the release time. I did some research and found this video which explains the "funkiness" that I see in his throwing motion. Having said that though, this guy thought it was a positive thing, so because of this and what ya'll have said, I'll just accept that his throwing motion is not a big deal:
Yeah, I mean time will tell, but throwing mechanics aren't what concerns me with him. Most important things he needs to work on: 1) Going through his progressions 2) Keeping his eyes downfield when he feels pressure 3) Footwork Those are HARD things to work on when you are getting pressured constantly so lets hope Watson is as special a kid as he seems when you hear him.
I think they are similar players but Wilson's mechanics are/we're vastly superior coming out of college. I agree he went later because of size. Fix Watson's mechanics, though, and I think they are very very similar QBs. Note how accurate Watson started to become in the second half once he started to get time and could get his feet under him.
I did too, but then theres that thing called our front office or at least that thing assumed to act like one.
Like I said, in the second half they essentially limited him to throws of 10 yards or less on quick reads. Those are throws he has always excelled at.
He only ran past the line of scrimmage 5 times, he pulled the ball down a lot. Again, I'm not blaming him for the line sucking big donkey d**k, no QB can succeed under those circumstances. I'm more concerned with his long term development. I want to see a QB go through his reads, not a QB check one or two receivers and then start dancing when the pocket gets a little congested. That's a thing all rookie QB's have to develop, it's particularly difficult when the time isn't there to allow you to develop that skill. To put it simply, the criticism was directed at the Texans putting a rookie QB in a bad spot, not Watson.
Not sure what you're trying to say. He essentially got tackled less than 8 times. 3 sacks and his other runs. Not tackled on the TD and I think he ran OB at least once. He did get hit a few times, but all QBs have that. What do you mean he pulled the ball down a lot? Regardless of how many times he pulled the ball down, he only ran 5 times.
Great debut imo. BoB tried to kill all momentum unsuccessfully running it on third and short THREE times. Watson will be only benefit from what the uphill battle he has on his hands. Get 2/3 tight ends back for week 3. Get Fuller back hopefully by week 5. One day, we may have a good offensive line, which will feel like night and day for Watson.
Meaning he stopped going through his progressions and looked to scramble/run out. I don't blame Watson for doing that but he's going to have to learn to do better going through his progressions and/or still looking to pass while he scrambles.
Good QB's do the vast majority or their damage from a nearly stationary position in the pocket, or in designed play action bootlegs. The ability to move and make something happen when a pocket breaks down is a very valuable skill, but a good offense can't be built around it. Watson isn't staying in the pocket and completing passes, most of his completions are coming on the move, and its not by design. There is no good pocket to work from right now, so he's doing what he can, but he will need to work from the pocket if he wants to be the QB we hope he can be. He's been athletic enough to do a ton of damage on the move. He was able to dominate at Clemson, and I'm sure in High School as well using that style, but he has to break himself of that to win in the NFL. The Texans aren't providing a good situation for that to happen, so my big concern is that we may be doing more damage than good allowing him to play behind this offensive line.
