There's a very good sushi fusion place called Kroger's. Kinda strange for a sushi restaurant because they sell a bunch of other random things too.

I do love sushi, but it is a massive ripoff to me. Maybe because I only really like the expensive rolls, and end up spending way too much to get my fill. Also seems to take way too long, and the well reviewed places here are always too busy.

You can always go to an Asian market, buy sushi grade sashimi, make sushi rice, and make it yourself and save a ton of money. Of course... if you are into the fusion rolls and don't like straight up nigiri, then this might not be worth it. Nigiri > Americanized rolls IMO.

Yeah I do actually, nigiri is actually my favorite, but I seem to spend even more on those. Two pieces the price of a roll. But I like the ratio of those best, and the fact that you get the fish on top, see its quality, hits your mouth not hidden inside a roll. Plus whatever they do to mutilate the fish in "spicy" rolls you really can't see.

The speciatly rolls I like have multiple types of fish inside and out, kind of a combination of rolls and nigiri. Probably americanized/

Would love to try to get some sushi grade and roll my own. Just after watching all the movies, wonder how much is due to quality of fish, and how much enjoyment the knifework and skill is responsible for.

At the end of the day quality of the fish (and freshness! buy on same day of consumption) is the largest part of it. The hardest part of home-made sushi is not butchering the sushi rice. Nothing is worse than taking that first bite and all you can taste is rice vinegar lmao.

Some of the best sushi I had was prepared by a Vietnamese chef in Saudi Arabia. And I've been to Tokyo lol

I just got back from Tokyo... there are no good sushi places in Houston.

Joking aside, I've always enjoyed Kata Robata.

My bro just came from eating there and he told me they kinda rush you to eat fast and no pictures are allowed. He said the sushi is the best he had.

Anyone tried Nippon in Montrose? Apparently it's the old Japanese-run sushi restaurant in Houston.

I was wondering if someone else would post this. My wife and I used to live on W. Alabama near St. Thomas and that was our favorite sushi place. We moved to the suburbs almost 8 years ago and haven't been back to Blue Fish since about 2013. I was hoping they're still on their game. The "Blue Fish Eye" was one of my favorite ever things to eat.

And you're right @coma... excellent place for a date.
