I agree, but will he be the starter in 3-4 years? That is the real question. He will get a chance to start in the next year to 18 months........but will he be good enough to keep the job?
Watson will be starting by the end of the season. I just don't think Savage will be able to get to the end zone enough.
Both Winston and Matt Ryans had accuracy issues and started day one. They didn't do to bad. Peyton Manning threw 28 interceptions his rookie year and he went to having a HOF career. My thing is some of yall always focus on the negatives too darn much. Cam Newton was inaccurate his rookie year but he still threw for over 4000 yards.
Both Winston and Ryan were infinitely more highly regarded prospects coming out of college than Watson so there's really no comparison when it comes to a talent perspective. Also, when it comes to Winston, his team was absolute garbage, so they had nothing to lose letting him figure things out on the fly because they knew they weren't going to be worth a damn no matter what. As to Peyton Manning, that gets cited a lot, but from his rookie season, he was the whole team. You ask a rookie to throw the ball 575 times, you are going to have a ton of interceptions no matter who they are. In fact, if you look at his rookie season with that in mind, the numbers look pretty solid. Right now if we started Watson and had him throw the ball 575 times how many interceptions do you think he'd have? I mean, he should have had 3 interceptions in his last preseason game alone and he wasn't throwing the ball that much so 30? 35? Just be patient and give him time to work on his game.
I can see O'Brien stick Watson in short yardage and goal line situations this year without starting him.
That makes no sense whatsoever. The main point is on their scouting report, accuracy was a negative just like Watson. Highly regarded? Man Watson highly sought after as well. The Texans went up 14 spots in the 1st round to get him. You might not think so but a lot actual experts clearly disagree with you on that Bobby. On to Manning. It's pretty strange how people use certain excuses to why this player done that. But doesn't use that same excuse for other players. You do know Watson was Clemson. Each year his passing attempt went up, especially from his Sophomore to Junior year. But that only applies to your deliberation of why Manning threw 28 interceptions huh? Even though that was just an example of Manning being inaccurate in his rookie year.
Both Winston and Ryan were hands down the best QB's in their class....there's ALWAYS something negative on a scouting report but when it comes to those 2 it was more looking for flaws to point out than anything else and those flaws were relatively minor. Take someone like Watson and the flaws were much more pronounced which is why there was no chance he was ever going to be the top QB taken....in just about any draft. He was seen as the 4th or 5th best QB in the class by most, the top 3 QB's went off the board and the Texans panicked. We're simply not talking about the same caliber of player. Just because experts thought he should be drafted at some point doesn't mean that they thought he was a definite starting QB caliber player which is what they thought about Winston and Ryan. You just keep comparing apples to oranges in a futile effort to defend Watson from legitimate criticism and it's weird. You are comparing Manning's first year in the NFL on an absolutely garbage team where he threw the ball more than any other QB in the league to Watson's college numbers? What do you think you are showing here? I'm as optimistic as anyone should be about Watson's future, but some people are just WAY over the top. He's not a top tier talent and was never thought of in that way by people other than Skip Bayless. The hope is that he'll turn into a solid NFL starting QB one day, not that he'll be the next big thing. Having unrealistic expectations doesn't benefit anyone.
I wasn't really that impressed. He's athletic but inaccurate, turnover prone, takes off way too early from pressure, and doesn't seem to grasp the offense yet.
that's what happens when you are a rookie and went through all of training camp + preseason as the backup, while also having to grasp O'Brien's "complex" offensive system.
And how could you blame him for doing so yesterday. How anyone can grade these quarterbacks after yesterdays lack of O Line is beyond me. I've seen Aaron Rodgers be just as bad with a similar offensive line.
BoB is not the right coach for him. He's too obsessed about his system, he doesn't want to adjust to his QB's strengths. The same flaw that Savage has--no football IQ, relies on a system that may not work anymore. Simplify the offense but practise the execution to perfection.
Correct he isn't that impressive now. I would give him 2-3 years than make the judgement. The texans around him in this offense right now aren't impressive enough yet to really bash Watson or even Savage too hard.
I don't know what he will become but I don't think he's ready right now. I don't care if we go 0-16 I would just run savage out there and if he gets hurt I'd bring back weeden. There is no reason to put Watson out there behind this line especially when he doesn't know the offense. I really hope we have a new offense next year
