This is a somewhat random thought, but it's what comes to mind when the early slate of games is pretty meh. Has there been a more disastrous college football coaching change in recent memory than ECU's decision to fire Ruffin McNeill? Classic case of a program getting bored of winning seven, eight, nine games per season and thinking that they're more than they are in the grand scheme of things, only to find out that the previous regime was getting the most out of the program. Last year, they went 3-9, including 1-7 in the AAC. This season so far, they've lost in routine fashion to FCS James Madison (in fairness, a very good JMU team) and this week, they're trailing West Virginia 49-3 at halftime. WVU is pretty good, but ECU from four or five years ago would never have completely folded up like this. I actually kind of feel bad for Scottie Montgomery, their current head coach. He, personally, didn't have anything to do with ECU cutting McNeill loose, but he's going to end up feeling the brunt of the anger of the fanbase.
I don't know about that. If I'm seeing it right, the two years prior to McNeill, they won C-USA. In McNeill's 4 years, they never even made the C-USA title game. I don't blame them for trying to do better, even if it's not realistic. It's not like McNeill had taken the program up a notch from where it was prior or even kept it at the same level.
Fair enough. I suppose I can see that argument, even though I would argue that he did keep them at the same level that Skip Holtz had established before leaving for USF. Holtz was 38-27 in five seasons while McNeill was 42-34 in six. They both essentially averaged 7-6 seasons. Holtz took them to a couple of CUSA championship games, but McNeill did lead them to a 10-win season, which Holtz never did. I'd call that a relative wash. I guess what made it seem more egregious a firing than it might have been was that McNeill is almost universally loved in the sport, and that's pretty rare these days. In fact, there was some thought that ECU was going to have trouble finding a replacement for McNeill because anyone who had coached under or with him wouldn't want to replace him when he had been unfairly let go in their minds. Whether or not that ended up being the case, only the administration and those coaches know. Just an interesting situation to me, because what can't be argued is that they're kind of a mess at this point in time.
Stanfords defense is trash this year, this loss of solomoss thomas is evident. They are more bend but dont break this year over 120 yards rushing for usc and its still the first half
Thoughts from what I saw today: Justin Hebert of Oregon is way better than I thought. He looked awful at times last year but has the physical tools to be stellar. JT Barrett of Ohio State just hasn't been the same since being injured 3 years ago. Maybe he misses Tom Herman. Clemson's defense (especially the D-line) is loaded. They have enough weapons on offense to contend if Kelly Bryant develops. I thought their preseason ranking at #5 was crazy, but maybe not. They have a decent chance at the CFP. Penn State is the team to beat in the Big Ten. They should be favored every game and make the CFP.
Baker Mayfield just planted the OU flag on the OSU logo at midfield and the whole team danced on it. Savage.
How many of these college QBs are better than Watson? Rosen Darnold Mayfield Jackson Allen Mcsorley Faulk Rudolph Browning Looks like this draft would of been a good time to draft a QB. Seems like Texans are always off by a year smh. Still love Watson tho.
OSU clowned them last year in Norman, the Okies wanted payback. Mayfield is a certified ass. Is there more to it than that? Serious ?
