I guess because Melo only wants to be here and because the Knicks already agreed to a deal like one month ago, if all of this is true, i agree with Morey.

 

While that above deal has the right moving parts, it's not the total story. If you go back to Woj's article about needing to expand it to a 4 team deal, more than likely, they all needed to find a fourth team to take on Leonard's contract, as the Knicks and Rockets didn't want him.

 

I'm fine with it but if Morey doesn't want to send that 1st rd pick for melo he doesn't want melo that bad. If our team is as good as we expect that pick won't be worth much.

Just guessing here.. not only do we not need to send much out for melo because NY has no leverage maybe Morey doesn't want melo as badly as we think he does?

Except we sent our 1st round draft pick to the Clippers. The next available pick we can send out is 2020. A lot can happen between now and then. What if Chris Paul leaves after this season and James Harden has a career ending injury? Sure would suck to not have the 2020 pick at that point. I realize those are long shots, but the point is we can't predict what will happen between now and the 2020 Draft.

 

You left out Motiejunas. But I wonder if you're aware that most players picked in the first round do not make it in the NBA for three years or more. Marcus Morris is having a very productive career. Sam Dekker looks like he could have a long and productive career. Jury is still out on Terrence Jones and Motiejunas (but Motiejunas was definitely on the path to long and productive career before the injuries). Obviously Royce White was a flop but Morey knew he was a long shot; just thought his upside was worth the risk.

I think you're selling Morey short here. For where he has drafted he has a pretty stellar draft record. And his second round success is phenomenal.

And also Portland decided that they wanted Melo for themselves.

I think a 1st is very very reasonable to get rid of if it means swapping Ryan for Melo. Ryan doesn't have 75% of the offensive skill set or put talent that Melo has
