He can sell share of the team to minority owners. To speed up the sale, he used his own money.

I have the same question as @pgabriel ... can you share where you found how much the franchise made last year? I'd also be curious to see a list of what all the teams made or lost. I've never been able to find any data for that, since they are private companies and don't need to disclose financials.

Furthermore, I too would like some clarification... $224 million in revenue is not the same as $224 million in net profit.

I find it extremely hard to believe a professional sports team makes a 10% ROE every year. $2.2 billion would be a huge bargain if that were the case and/or Les would be crazy to not to hold onto the team all the way to the grave.

Team ownership is mostly a status thing for the super-rich, and at best, Tilman is hoping the market value of the team continues to outpace inflation.

He certainly could but it is very unlikely. He has usually liked to have full ownership and control of his business ventures.

Thx. Now I remember that list. In his article, doesn't say how he got the numbers. Was that a leak from the league audit? Or did the NBA freely release for fan transparency. I'm assuming he got them from the league audit during the July moratorium for establishing BRI and the Salary Cap. He doesn't say though.

Reason I'm curious is because I'm trying to get a feel for how much Les makes from Operating Rights to all TC events, not just NBA games. That doesn't need to be reported as BRI, so maybe Rockets Ltd (or whatever the org is called) makes more than shown by Forbes, if they are working off of BRI numbers. Everyone says those Operating Rights to TC made the Rockets value higher than normal, since running an indoor event venue is profitable outside the NBA games

fwiw: that 8% debt column includes arena expenses. I'm assuming that's the lease payments to the city.

Where do you think the net income number alone puts the value of the franchise.

I have heard similar things about the other revenue from the arena pushing up franchise value

quick way in valuating a business

    Net Income X 36 = $ 62.7M* X 36 = 2.25B
    * I used Operating Income since Net Income is not available

if no income info and only revenue is available then use this

    Revenue X 12 = $2.44M X 12 = 2.9B
