If I were him, first thing I'd do is put a Landry's restaurant in Shanghai and Beijing called The Bearded BBQ Palace, and sell Texas BBQ, Fried Gulf Shrimp and Oyster Po-Boys, with caged Panda Bears and Longhorn steer, and waitresses wearing RPD outfits, then advertise the restaurants with courtside ads and jersey patches target China viewers.
#1 Win a Championship to become a legend. Ultimately you are judged on winning. Cool uniforms and dollar hotdogs mean nothing if your team is consistently mediocre. #2 Make the Rockets your passion outside of your family. Demand the same from your front office and players. Alexander got out when his passion was gone. An owner can win without passion but not consistently. Look at owners like Buss in LA for decades. The Lakers were his passion and it showed. #3 Learn about the game and from your mistakes. Les Alexander learned from his mistakes. Tilman already knows the game but not the business of the NBA. Check your ego enough to learn. Tilman said he likes to be the boss and there is only one boss. True but realize you can be humbled. # 4 Spend competitively. You don't have to spend like the Knicks, but you need to spend money to resign star players and be willing to go into the luxury tax at the right times. #5 Hire the right people and give them an opportunity to succeed. For someone so hands on, this can be hard. Still, you hire the best and you should listen to the best. If Morey needs something, get it for him. #6 Know when to step in and lead. This is the hardest one and the one Les was good at. Les knew when things needed to change. A perfect example was the season after Harden/Howard went to the WCF. After we limped to the end of the season; Les took over. He put everyone's feet to the fire. He (not Morey) insisted on D'Antoni. He pushed Morey to use his cap space, and he spoke directly to the fans saying he would fix the problems. #7 Don't be afraid to take risks. Les Alexander hired Morey when no one else would. Alexander knew that the same old approach wasn't working so he hired someone with radical beliefs not held by the greater NBA culture at the time. Alexander believed in Daryl and had the balls to take the risk. Thinking big isn't bad for an owner. I don't give a damn whether they change the uniforms of if they have dollar tacos. I want a solid progressive approach and to win big sometimes. I want an organization I know is capable and an owner that will support his people because he believes in them. Want to fix attendance in the lower bowl? Great but winning a title will take care of that. Take care of your own and be genuine so fans know you care and have their back. That is the difference between a Jerry Buss and a Bob McNair... also why at the end of the day, when all the b****ing and whining stops; Rockets fans will look back and say they respect Alexander because he did everything he could to win.
Where is that guy today? The company I used to work at had this secretary who sent one of our big clients an email in pink writing. The dude is anal as **** and flipped out. My boss told the client he fired her ass and just set her up a new email specifically for this client with a made up name. It's been ten years now. As far as I know she still works there and he is still a major client. I like to believe this is what happened to this man
Promise to never move the Rockets out of Houston. Some opined that he might consider moving to Las Vegas since he owns casinos there, but I've heard he is loyal to Houston, so we'll see.
