Yeah... Because we all know that a team owner's finances and willingness to spend aren't important to winning a championship and what really matters is we get a jersey that appeals to Salvy...

The blind optimism in this thread is silly. Fact is we just got an owner who is defined by cost-cutting and strict bottom line decision making.

I can guarantee you Tilman's mentality is "I want this team to be profitable and win, in that order."

The other owners have to approve, what is the reasoning behind that? What if they block him from buying because of his casino and betting interests?

I'm just thankful that Les and his family can eat again. Basketcaseholic told me they were broke.

Not sure how it's a reach, like I said, just my humble opinion. I think a lot of this turns on what you think of Fertitta's businesses. As you say, perhaps Fertitta has spent a ton of money on his business. And perhaps that has made him a lot more money than he otherwise could have. But as a consumer, I'm not a fan. The restaurants seem nice enough, with decent service, but very bland, very corporate, and too high of prices. You can go to cheaper places with better food, or fancier places for the same prices. I'm sure there are a ton of people who love Landry's, and maybe they would claim a Fertitta restaurant is their favorite, but I'd venture to say these aren't very discerning food people. And there's nothing wrong with that, clearly it's supremely profitable. However, like most people on this site, I'm a discerning basketball fan and I would hope the owner of the Rockets is someone with a history of appealing to the most critical consumers. With Fertitta, that's not the case.

Yes, he has spent at UH and has been very generous, but this is a whole different level. It's like saying someone that tipped 100% for a Starbucks coffee will do the same after a dinner for 4 at Tony's.

Getting excited in the arena may be needed, but it will never be high on my priority list. I want a team that can win now, and later. If you have to sacrifice the in game excitement budget to get that, I'm not going to be too upset.

New owner, now we can get a new onslaught of "insiders" via leaks from the Fertitta family.

With respect to an NBA team, don't the most critical customers want the same thing as the least critical customers do? Winning and a championship?

I'm optimistic, but I really don't think anyone has enough solid evidence to make a reasoned guess as to the quality of his future ownership. It could go left or right. I'm not a fan of Landry's restaurants either but I'm sure we could take any food genre and argue about restaurant quality there. It's all subjective, but the fact that he's been extremely successful in most of the things he's tried is far less subjective.

Hope this works out for us in a big way.

I like the move, but I have my doubts as well.

Fertitta isn't some Houston outsider though. I'm confident he realizes he won't sell as many tickets and the city will lose support if the team isn't a contender.

I am not really a fan of Landry's food never have been. However because I don't like the food; has very little real practical connection to how the Rockets will be run. I don't like Microsoft, Quicken Loans, Little Caesars Pizza, AOL or Carnival Cruises either. Yet, the founders and CEO's of those companies have been viewed as very good to model owners or have won Championships. Hell, Les Alexander was a junk bond seller that had a history of buying and selling assets quickly when he bought the team 25 years ago. Everyone was afraid of a Yankee Jew with an accent buying the team. Ultimately, Les is probably the most popular owner in Houston sport history.

As far as spending money at UH, he spend millions and millions and received no return on his investment financially. The idea that Tillman Feritta won't do well with discerning basketball fans because his restaurants are mediocre is really a reach.

Ultimately Tillman may go down as a terrible owner...... or he could be a great owner. No one really knows, but I don't see the quality of his food in his restaurants as any indication of how his time as owner will pan out. One thing is for sure, he does care about Houston and how he is viewed by people in Houston. If you are around him (he was very easy to reach or speak with if you were involved in UH booster events) it is clear that he wants to win, and will do everything humanly possible to make it happen.
