I went to go see a movie while the family was shopping the other day and it was the new Spiderman. I told myself I'm getting too old for this **** before the movie started and I really didn't want to watch it but I had some time to kill. The reviews were pretty good so I decided screw it I'll check it out. My gut was right. The movie was meh and it was obviously for the youngins even though it featured RDJ.

The youngins are all at home watchinng netflix. The theatre was empty as was the movie. This was in denver btw.

TV and NETFLIX series have surpassed Hollywood for me in terms of quality.

No movie will ever make me feel what series like GOT or Stranger Things do for me. The amount of depth in lore and character development can't be done on the big screen and now these TV series have the sfx that rival summer big screen movies each episode.

I just feel empty watching any new summer blockbuster. I feel hardly anything when watching something like the Avengers movies. I have no attachment to the characters and the plot is often far too outlandish because they have to fit an epic arc within 100-120 minutes.

I have been a movie fanatic for the past 10 years.

Probably 3 a month, I would watch anything.

    But then....baby.

I enjoy a movie experience at a movie theatre. I don't invest in a TV or speakers or anything (no cable or anything), so the experience is always better for me at a theatre. I enjoy having an adult beverage and relaxing in front of a big screen.

That being said......the movie experience has gotten tremendously worse over the years. Too many jackasses on their phones texting or talking, just generally being disrespectful to everyone else. Plus, as everyone has said, too many movies are terrible. I'm not gonna see a movie with a rotten tomato and if they wanna fix that, just make better movies, pretty simple. There are worthwhile movies out there, but they are less prevalent and major theaters don't play them. I've been trying to see the Big Sick for weeks and we just got a single theatre in Denver showing it (and its at an inconvenient location for me personally). Plus obviously the sequels and "blockbusters" are all garbage. I'm not gonna see "Movie X" 4 or any marvel movie, I simply have zero interest and making more of them is just gonna perpetuate that. TV is too good right now to waste time with terrible movies.

Feel like Marvel started this mess, there's zero creativity right now and everyone doing generic sequels/reboots in order to compete with Marvel's hero flicks.

Only thing I've really looked forward to in recent years are the annual Star Wars movies, and even those are sequels or spin-offs.

I would like for bigger movies to have interactive glasses where you can likely choose between 3 different endings or beginnings.

That would be an experience to pay couple of bucks more.

    Different scenarios FTW.

Better previews would be nice. Its almost to the point I can watch a preview and have no clue what the movie is about. All you get is something blowing up, the star of the movie, and something else blowing up.

Consumer spending is down, we're in the golden era of good television and everyone has a huge TV.

    @No Worries

They should just make more Wallace & Gromit movies if they really want to pump up the attendances.

Too bad the Wallace voice actor passed. I think they are making a Shaun The Sheep 2 though.

I stopped watching everything after breaking bad ended. I told myself whats the point, nothing as good will ever come out again. It ruined tv and movies for me.

I see i was not the only one. Not many good movies/tv shows have dropped in a long time. Why? Hollywood is too cheap to compete with netflix. And movie theatre tickets are too expensive. It costs over $50 to watch a movie with a family of four these days with one box of popcorn.

All I know is my 7 year old tried to persuade me to go see the emoji movie. And I threw down a big no for that trash.

Right now, only a few of us seem to consciously realize this. In time, most people will admit the obvious.

An 8-12 episode TV series can tell a far more complete story than a movie, at a fraction of the cost. A lot more risks can be taken because failure doesn't equal financial disaster. It's to the point now that I just don't have time to watch every show I might find interesting.

I don't go to movies. A $5.99 HD rental after 3-4 months is good enough for me.

NetFlix quality rises.....and there are HBO, Amazon, Hulu......

Not saying it's killing it but it has some impact.

I don't buy that TV and Netflix are killing movies. You go to the theaters because it's an experience, one that can't be replicated at home. Not everybody loves that experience, but most do.

The fact is that most movies suck right now. The franchise obsession is what is killing the box office. Christopher Nolan has made 3 completely original, stand alone movies, and they did well at the box office because they were good. Remake, sequel, franchise starter, that's all every damn movie is. There is too much money to be made from theatrical releases for studios to move away from it, they just have to do a better job than they are doing right now. Everybody needs to stop trying to be Marvel. Comics lend themselves to this, but trying to wrangle every piece of crap into a franchise before its even out is just stupid.

The only non comic book movies I have seen this summer are Dunkirk and Power Rangers (nostalgic curiosity got the better of me, regretted it almost immediately). I will also see the new Star Wars later this year.

not many movies have enough resources like the lotr where you get 20 hours over 3 movies to tell a story.

Home entertainment is crippling the cinema experience much like video game consoles killed the arcade. I drop $50+ to take my family to a movie, because we get insanely priced popcorn and drinks as part of the experience. For most movies, I can do that at home. Granted, I don't think that the cinema experience will die completely, but it will drive innovation and push prices down. I would also pay to watch a new release from my home.

Very few movies now are worth the price of admission. I missed "Dunkirk", knowing I'd like it. Otherwise, we only saw Guardians 2 (we liked it a lot) and Spidey 12 (good, but overall, no strong impression in the long run).

There was some real doggy doo in the cineplex. Baywatch? The Mummy with Tom Cruise?

    Question for those in here:

Would you go to the "movies" if instead of movies it was 2 he of screen time you could use to watch a new movie or watch a tv show or watch YouTube or play video games?
