We can't sit around year after year and whine about losing prospects. The Astros are loaded with prospects if you haven't seen that yet. Now what we don't have is consistent starting pitching. At least we didn't lose bregman or fisher (guys that are proving they're good in the majors) let's just sit back and see what this does for the team. Also I think our roster was a little butt hurt we didn't make a move in July. This might be what we needed to get this team to really start kicking some ass.
Couldn't agree more. Prospects are what they are... PROSPECTS. How many guys are prospects that can't cut it in the majors or better yet, never make it out of the minors. I'll take verlander any day in that trade

For now, obviously the Astros are going to reap some benefits... likely next year as well. These prospects are very young, and it will take another 3-5 years to really hash out their true value.
Clubhouse has a reputation of being click-ish... but less so now with more veterans. This should help further that. I expect the rest of the pitching staff to try and soak up every single aspect of what he does, from training regimens to how he prepares for each start. Keuchel and McHugh are the current veteran leaders of the staff, and even they're likely to benefit from his presence... let alone the younger guys.
If we had claimed Verlander for nothing we would still have the potential to "lose" this trade. I really like the deal because the upside is certainly worth the risk, but there is risk. He cleared waivers for a reason.
The true winners are the wives of the Houston Astros players who now get to mix and mingle with Kate Upton. If that goes well, then the players have one less thing to worry about... lol It's going to be interesting seeing someone who is sorta famous sitting on the sidelines. Get ready for TMZ.
I do think that if Houston wins the World Series they will have some additional money to play with. It's probably the difference between having to shed salary or not. Really, given the players they have, the only true need is a lefty reliever, and if they decide it doesn't have to be an elite guy, they can get one for a few million bucks. So payroll isn't a massive concern, but they are going to be somewhat restricted as a result of adding Verlander. One things for sure, they won't be involved in any high salary players in free agency or at next years deadline.
Couple ideas: Can we worry about next year's payroll after this season? We will figure it out! There are lots of moving pieces--and way too many variables--to give any sort of accurate prediction. I think Snake is on the money, our payroll will float around 145mm. Worry about it later. We have a lot to look forward to besides payroll! Second, the price was high, but as Kaleidosky or Major (I think?) said, that's just the cost of doing business. Front line starters have an steep cost. Even those that come with risks, a la JV. Fact is, the best teams can match that price and not let that price sink them. We have the depth to do that. We kept several key prospects. I'd rather have Whitley, Tucker, Bregman, Martes, Fisher and Verlander, than Sale or Quintana and 2-3 of those prospects. Luhnow has shown an elite ability to evaluate, locate, and sign talent. Hindsight drafters will always have the upper hand, but Luhnow unquestionably does well when compared to his peers.
Having Peacock, Morton, Devo, Harris, Martes and sometimes Musgrove out of the bullpen is niceeee. Giles been proving me wrong the last two months and been pitching as well as Kimbrel.
I don't see this much different than claiming him on waivers unless the PTBNL/additional cash is significant. By not claiming Verlander, Astros basically just sold Detroit some prospects for 16 million. Prospects Astros traded probably are worth about the $16 million Detroit kicked in. Astros did this trade because they felt they had backed themselves into a corner and needed a few more innings in the postseason.
We dont know if the Astros won this trade yet. It's way too early to be making statements like this We will have to see how the prospects develop for Detroit. Taking on 20 mil for the next 2 years is a gamble in my book.
