I am in the market for a new desktop PC because my existing one is unstable, old, and slow as hell. I'm not much of a gamer. I typically do that on Xbox One but may do some games on a new PC (who knows...maybe VR eventually). That said...I think gaming desktops are generally a better choice overall than a non-gaming desktop (e.g. Dell XPS). They tend to have better components from what I've seen. Although, the whole "lighted" thing is a gimmick I could do without. The bigger difference would be a dedicated graphics card in the gaming PC versus using integrated graphics (or a more limited card) on a non-gaming PC. I also prefer a SSD for the boot drive. I wouldn't even be opposed to having Intel Optane memory but you can't use Optane memory to speed a regular SATA HDD as a secondary drive. The SATA HDD has to be the OS boot drive....which sucks. I like the concept of Optane memory working with the HDD to improve performance by caching frequently used stuff in non-volatile memory. It just sucks that you can't really use Optane memory with machines that have both SSD (PCIe) and HDD (SATA) unless you make the HDD the OS boot drive (which would still be slower than booting from a SSD...which is faster reads/writes with higher throughput). My understanding also is Optane requires an i7 Intel Core CPU and the drive must be SATA-based to use it.

Anyway, buying a desktop PC is worse than buying a car imo...too many choices.

I'm looking at this machine at price $1139:

    CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme GXi10200A Desktop Gaming PC (Intel i7-7700 3.6GHz, NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB 7200RPM HDD, PCIe 120GB SSD, Win 10 Home), White

It being Labor Day sales going on and all...I'm curious if there is a better deal to be had. I think the one I mentioned above is a pretty good deal at $1139 and I have seen the same machine advertised at $300 more than the above price. I could probably find a refurbished Alienware Aurora R6 or whatever with similar specs but a better MB on eBay for a little more. I just don't really want to push the price much higher.

I could build (as I've done before) but I'd rather not and I don't think I would save much compared to above.

Any thoughts? I always feel like I'm going to buy a machine I think is good. Then, I should have chosen a different one that was actually better. But, that's life I guess. Now is the chance to point out the better options! :)

Highly recommend you build your own, or atleast buy all the components your self and have a place like microcenter put it together, if you don't want to risk it. Cyberpower is know to use crappy components like the power supply, coolers, etc, which can cause your computer to fail.

You WILL save money on components if you pick your list and shop around for sales / rebates / free games, etc.

Here is your best resource for experts and other guides:

    Also this tool is amazing:

Build your PC and use AMD's new platform. You will get the biggest bang for your buck.

PCpartpicker is an awesome site, I highly recommend it as well. Good place to get ideas if you're new, or even if this is your 100th + for a friend, makes it great w/ real-time prices/rebates etc.

On a side note, you might be able to get a 1070 card in that price range, and might even be more valuable to dip to 7600k, and get a bigger SSD, Optane might be cool, but SSD is better, And while you can combine it w/ SSD a 500 gb samsung can be had as low as 110 (if near a Frys and in stock) or about $140 , unless looking at Nvme etc.

Also, Optane will work fine with an i5 (heck technically an i3), Intel just wants it to be the 7th gen series (not an actual i7, but the 7xxx etc).

I think 1070 might have to build your own (sorry, I know.. ) but I think w/ MC/amazon/newegg etc you could pull off gtx 1070 easily, maybe even gtx 1080 if lucky (at about $11-1200). This all depends if you get lucky, lately Newegg has been doing gtx 1080s though their ebay store at $4-450, just insane, and no tax.

A 500gb ssd and 1070/1080 (even if not gaming yet) will last you a ton longer vs 1060

And that 7600k is no slouch either, a system with an i5 and 1070/1080 (w bigger SSD) will smoke a 7700k 1060 smaller ssd setup. The only place that i7 can win is if you're running specialized apps like audio/video/cad editing, and even then newer apps are allowing gpu's to do post processing, gpu tech is light years ahead (ok, well a **** load faster)

I feel like you might be overpaying, but I haven't been tracking the market lately, so not entirely sure. That doesn't seem like a bad way to go, though. Tack on a 1070 and you'd get better value that the original link you posted.

Here's my breakdown (components priced on Amazon):

    CPU (i7-7700K) - $337
    MB - $115
    DVD RW - $33
    SSD - $140
    MEM (16 GB) - $157
    PS - $60

    $842 without case/fans and keyboard/mouse (junk)

I would say that is a pretty good deal for $899.

Unfortunately it's a bad time to build with how outrageous GPU prices are. Not too long ago, Microcenter had a really well-priced pre-built with an I5-6600K and GTX 1070 for $999 but it doesn't look like they have anything close to being as good in value now.

    Build you own.

It's easy. It's literally plug and play.

Since you are not into gaming, even $1000 is over budget. You don't need to buy a GPU right now. If you ever feel the need to game, just buy one later on and plug it in. Simple as that.

You can build a great system below $1000 and it will be a clean windows install, free from any bloatware.

Make an account at hardforum.com. There is a section for new pc build and advice. Give them your budget. Someone there will link you to each part on Amazon or newegg within your budget. I would have done it for you here but I am currently busy editing a ton of pics.

Buy those components, build it, and prosper.

I have built my own systems for last 12 years or so. I would never ever buy a pre built system. You pay 30% premium to someone for inferior parts, labor cost for putting them together, and then loading up your system with bloatware. And on top of it, pre built systems are harder to upgrade down the line because of shitty cases and cheap power supplies.

Speaking of power supplies, this is the most important component. Do not be cheap on a power supply. It runs your entire system. A lot of people go cheap on power supply and pay the price later.

    Good luck.

PS. I recommended hardforum for a reason. You want to build a balanced system. It does you no good to invest 400 on a super component but then it gets bottlenecked with everything else. You want a system that makes most of everything you have. Folks at hardforum will help you put together stable components that work well together.

That seems like a hell of a deal considering the rebate, the GTX 1070 8 GB VR ready card, and the SSD is PCIe NVMe versus SATA.

I'll consider this one as well. If I do get one with a dedicated graphics card, then I would have to do some gaming. I don't know anything much about VR prices....but am interested.

I have a Micro Center relatively close by. I may have to get over there if I want that MSI as the rebate ends 08/31.

Well, I was getting ready to head out today to Micro Center but I noticed this morning that the $100 off rebate ended on 08/30 (based on Micro Center site and MSI rebate site saying so). The slickdeals website showed "through 08/31". I thought I had today. I'm a little pissed. Lil'l bit. I'm a lil'l bit pissed! LIL'L BIT! I WANT MY EFFIN $100 REBATE! Screw you, slickdeals! If your data is bad on deals, then what good are you? Bad taste.

I guess I'm going to see what other deals may be around for this Labor Day. Still on the prowl!
