Joel is a friend of mine, I played basketball with him for over 10 years at the YMCA on Post Oak - he is actually a great guy, but this not opening his church is lame.

He will just say..."Lord, forgive me" and all his parishioners will fall in line.

I'm always Leary of mega rich Pastors. How can you be doing the Lord's work and rake in so much dough? He showed his ass today. Houston doesn't forget.

He's a sack of **** and it's just confirming that his only interest is enriching himself and doesn't give a damn about the community. Any church that isn't actually flooded that isn't open to help people right now should have 0 people show up on Sunday.

I don't know anything about Olsteen's character, but frankly these accusations seem extremely presumptuous. Does it matter that the church itself appears to have taken on water? Wasn't Olsteen and his family evacuated from his home on a boat? Lakewood Church is a huge facility, isn't it possible that the staff required to safely open the building to the public can't get there due to flooding and or road closures; or maybe they themselves have faced devistation? Does it not matter that part of the facility actually is being used as a staging ground for supplies being distributed to shelters?

Maybe Lakewood did willing close its doors to those in need, maybe it didn't. I honestly don't know, but neither does anyone else who is throwing stones.

Let's revisit this in a week. Harvey is a clusterfukc that will go on for weeks if not months. There is plenty of time for redemption

Meh, it's easier to be instantaneously outraged than to stop and think for a second.

The irony. The guy who hates religion so much likes the religious King that most faith followers find disgusting.

Osteen is very charismatic. That is how he is able to rake in tens of millions a year.

Religion is suppose to be about charity, not building a religious empire/legacy and feel good gospel. Mattress Mac did not have excuses on opening his stores and let the needy come in.

Damn. You don't seem to have a problem with President Cheeto doing the same and he was elected. Cheeto is doing much worse.

For those interested in the complete story - this is my understanding as compiled from snopes, CNN, and various news articles:

On Sunday the surrounding area of Lakewood was flooded. This has been confirmed by local (non-Lakewood affiliated) security on the ground that day. This was the day Lakewood made the post about being inaccessible.

The flooded pictures you see are NOT of Lakewood or its garage, but hey are from somewhere close by. The same security that said the area was flooded, also said the garages were NOT flooded (they have flood gates that were closed, but if the garages were open to the public, they would have flooded)

On Monday, much of the water on the roads in that area had receded, routes to Lakewood were accessible again & Lakewood began prepping to handle relief efforts.

Lakewood confirmed that there was some water in the lower levels, but not on the 2nd floor.

The Concourse you see in the video and pictures are above the main sanctuary level, so it remained fairly dry.

Lakewood had a skeleton crew of 8 maintenance workers in the building who were instructed to let anyone in who needs shelter. About 3 people came in and they were taken to the George R Brown Convention center.

The Sanctuary hold 16,000, but they can't house people in the chairs so they have set up air mattresses on the second level and can house several hundred people.

After the massive flooding last year in Louisiana, Lakewood had people and supplies on the ground in that area before President Obama showed up.
(strangely enough, no media reported this)

I've personally seen him hand over a check for $50,000 to Feed The Children - I was literally 20 feet away.
(Again, there was no media there, and I don't believe there was a press release either)

On a monthly basis, Lakewood helps its members in need by doing things like monetarily helping them pay their bills, providing food, etc.

They also provide counseling (by actual licensed people) for recovering drug/alcohol addicts, marriage issues, grief support groups, counseling for military families, etc at no cost.

This is off the top of my head & I don't go to Lakewood, nor live in Houston. However, I have heard that they are always supporting the community, its just that the press doesn't care to show that kind of thing because you know.."if it bleeds, it Leads"

Lakewood had to be publicly shamed into offering shelter and assistance.

    Wow.

    I would still
First class human that matress mack. My parents purchased their first house on gingerleaf lane back in 1995. Mac personally delivered the 90s style sofas and dining table to our house, had dinner with us, (take out from a taco cabana that was on wirt back in the day) and carried a conversation in spanish. My parents still have that dining table that looks like something from the middle ages.
    I know..Cool mac story, bro.

If he ever ran for governor, I'd vote for him. Yes, I'm aware who Mack has his loyalty to....VY Only Fan =)
