The state of the deal is stalemate, even a checkers guy like me can understand that much chess. However, 'we' are not at checkmate and whether DM the GM will offer a knight instead of a pawn or the other side relinquishes their demands for a uh, king's ransom or unknown team, perhaps now out from shadow of wanting in on Irving, is ready to uh, tilt the table.

Bottom line: stalemate is not checkmate. Now, checkers players, king me!

 

Of course they're dormant right now. There's absolutely zero motivation for the Knicks to jump on a deal right now. We're still a month away from training camp. I expect to hear leaks about how unhappy Carmelo is with the situation in New York once they start having team activities. Until then, everybody needs to chill the **** out.

Melo will be a Rocket eventually, it may take even to the trade deadline but it will happen eventually. Knicks won't keep him past the deadline and risk losing him for nothing.

 

385 has to be the goal today. 380 at least.

Depending on what they are getting in return for him, the Knicks might value the cap space he would clear by walking away more than they value a bad contract in a trade. Also, using that logic, they would be much more likely to get a better piece for him now in a trade than they would in February. Whoever gets Carmelo would want him for the full season if that's a possibility.

The real risk for the Knicks is Carmelo OPTING IN for the remaining 2 years/$50M+ they would owe him.

 

That is exactly the case. He isn't leaving 27 million on the table. He will opt in.

 

There is no guarantee that Melo is in Houston if the season starts. Injuries happen and so on.

We need to get him before camp or by season's start at the latest.
