Don't know if this has been posted already but Jeff Van Gundy will be coaching team USA for FIBA world Qualifying starting in November. It'll be really cool to see him back on the sidelines. Here's the link to the article: https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-jeff-van-gundy-coach-u-s-world-cup-qualifying-010607886.html
Very misleading thread title. Popovich is coach of the national team. This is just qualifiers. There will be no NBA players on the team. Still very cool he's coaching, though. Thx for the link, @Tristan_fiore From the article: Jeff Van Gundy will coach USA Basketball’s roster of non-NBA professionals who will try to qualify for the Americans for the World Cup in 2019, league sources told The Vertical. Van Gundy will coach a roster compromised largely of NBA Development League and overseas American players in tournaments over the next several months. Gregg Popovich, who’s replacing Mike Krzyzewski as the national coach, will take over coaching the senior national team in the 2019 World Cup in China.
I wonder if JVG will try some experimental stuff in this run that he will consider transitioning to an eventual NBA coaching opportunity.
There were some changes to the qualifiers this year and it's going to extend past the summer and through part of the NBA season. Therefore, no NBA players or coaches are allowed to be a part of it.
JVG is such an amazing guy. The players he coaches will learn so much from him. That's pretty awesome. Get ready for 88-75 type of games.
Wow! No Ex Knickerbockers! Ok - He will be coaching non professionals and the REAL Coach is Poppovich coaching the senior team. Got me excited for a minute.
Rudy did more. Rudy coached the actual Team USA and won Olympic Gold Medal. Before that, he coached Team USA in the World Championship, but due to labor dispute, no NBA players were on the team. JVG is coaching the qualifying team with no NBA players. So in the sense they coach teams without NBA players makes it similar. But JVG isn't actually coaching Team USA in the Worlds or Olympics like Rudy did on two occassions. Popovich is the head coach.
When Morey said he wanted more Team USA guys, maybe he meant one of these guys? They should be easily attainable.
Lulz. Been coaching for 2 days and he already went from happy/joking face to sour self loathing no sleep in 3 weeks face.
NBA coaches are masochists. They love the thrill of the ultra high stress job that gives them ulcers and countless sleepless nights and will usually choose that any day over a cushy broadcast gig in a room with AC.
It's good to see Jeff getting involved in coaching again, and particularly as one of the coaches of Team USA. I've always liked the guy. I guess it's his personality more than his coaching, although I like his focus on defense (which we could use more of with the Rockets). It will be interesting to see what he can do on the offensive side of the game. It's no longer the '90's. The league has changed. Has Van Gundy?
Heard that JVG has been super sharp in these practices so far, I quote.. "He's like a professor on the court"
