    I don't agree with that.

Robert E Lee and Andrew Jackson (among others) are getting a lot of backlash because of popular sentiment. If you want to tear down monuments for Lee or discredit Jackson, you sure as hell better do it for Washington and Jefferson and many others. To give them a pass is a convenient cop out. Washington had the teeth pulled out of his slaves skulls. Jefferson failed to emancipate many of his slaves.

They all were products of their time. Hell Lincoln thought at one time blacks should be sent to Africa on ships, were not as bright as white men and didn't especially have a lot of sympathy for the oppression of Native Americans.

It isn't just that Lee fought for the South and slavery, it's that was his claim to fame. Washington and Jefferson did own slaves, and they have been called out for that. But the statues that honor them aren't honoring them for fighting for slavery. The statues that honor Robert Lee are doing so because of his role in the Civil War which was to preserve slavery.

So there is a difference. Recently it has been very popular to denounce Washington to a larger degree and Jefferson to a smaller degree for the ownership of slaves. However, those guys are honored for more than just their military leadership in the effort to preserve slavery.

Yes, all those instances Trump supporters were attacked for simply attending a Trump rally. There is video evidence of them all.

So I just watched Trump's latest presser in its entirety.

    I'm not feeling the outrage.

I thought that his initial response (Saturday) to the events lacked two major things 1) singling out the deadly terrorist attack and 2) condemnation of the Nazi/white nationalist constituency and their ideology.

His Monday comments were on point but they did feel and appear to be forced and scripted.

His remarks tonight clearly do nothing to dissuade my suspicions that his comments on Monday were stilted or disingenuous.

His comments about Washington and Jefferson were absolutely stupid and his "I wanted all the facts" rhetoric is utter nonsense given his proclivity for making far rasher statements/judgments on much less information.

However, his overarching point that violence is unacceptable from either party is correct, and he is also correct that both sides likely share blame.

Just because one side holds absolutely morally repugnant viewpoints does not mean they are fair game to be beaten, gassed, or otherwise assaulted with impunity.

It's been my impression that in many of these right-wing demonstrations the left counter-protesters are typically the instigators, but the right-wing folks are typically quite happy to incite and encounter violence. Nothing seems to make the right happier, even, than being given a chance or a reason to cosplay as a solider or pretend to be the next John Brown.

This is why I wish the left would learn to just ignore these assholes. Identarians, racists, ethno-nationalists. These people are the joke of our society. Do not dignify them or raise their public profile with your time or attention. Even worse, definitely do not cede to them the moral high ground by assaulting them or turning them into martyrs.

The Alt Right and SJW/Antifa bloc are a match made in hell for each other, and they are dragging our national discourse into the gutter by leaving nothing less than a razor's edge in the middle of our political spectrum.

All those shots are video capture, not photos.

    Here's one example

So when Trump is calling the guys out there with their torches in the white nationalist rally the Friday before the terrorist incident good guys, you don't see a problem with that? You don't understand where the outrage is coming from?

I agree that violence from all sides is bad. But using a terrorist incident to talk about the violence of someone not involved in the terrorist incident seems ridiculous and missing the point.

Yeah that seemed to be another one of those worthless word salad moments from him where he just says something to try to appeal to everyone.

    Exact quote:

I'm sure not everybody who was there in support of the statue was a Nazi or KKK member, and I'm sure not everyone there in opposition was a riotous Commie, either. BTW he wasn't referring to Friday's event.

Shouldn't we be worried that this is exactly how the Nazi revolution started?

Robert E Lee was a soldier and did not fight for the Confederacy based simply on slavery, as he was well aware it was immoral. The idea that the Civil War and the motivations of the people involved was solely slavery is overly simplistic. From my study of Lee and American history, I don't even think Lee would have supported Civil War monuments erected after all the participants were dead.

However the idea of trying to differentiate founders we like from those we don't on arbitrary measures is a slippery slope and dangerous. The reality is that ALL of our history, all of those that made decisions in the past have flaws when viewed under a modern lens are likely unforgivable to many. Fredrick Douglas was a horrible misogynistic predator. Adams felt the poor were disposable. It is ALL a matter of perspective, tell a Native American that Jefferson and Washington progressed the ideals of freedom. Tell black people alive during that period and see how they felt about it.

Perspective is something that is difficult for the masses to collectively agree on. Tear down all the historical Civil War monuments and I doubt it changes much. Just don't be surprised when some want to tear down monuments to Washington and Lincoln and others. It is our history and it is very complicated.

I find the tearing down of historical monuments to be lazy. It has very little to do with a bunch of idiots with tiki torches marching or communists or other groups deciding to protest.
