The point of Osweiler is that age matters when evaluating young players. The argument for Osweiler was that he had little experience and his age was irrelevant only his lack of experience should be considered. The difference between a 20 year old and a 23 year old is stark in terms of comparing raw numbers. Even right now, after 3 seasons in the league Correa is younger than Bregman and his 400 plate appearances. His argument is disingenuous, he doesn't really believe that Bregman is as good a prospect as Correa and you would be hard pressed to find many that feel the same. He called people that wanted to deal Bregman for Sale idiots. A strong argument can be made either way. Sale is under contract for three years at the time of the trade and is likely the best pitcher in the AL. There is a strong argument to be made either way. As far as his other points, he pulled half of them out of thin air. I never said the Astros made a mistake letting Martinez get away. Then he claimed I said the Astros were trying to get Martinez, I never said that either. Rick says whatever fits his narrative and beats up straw men. Either way I am done with it. I should have just let him do his thing like most people usually do on here.
The reality is pitching is so fungible that there will likely always be a concern. I am sure that is why the Astros are so protective of their young arms.
Really? Thanks for the insight. Bregman has 500 at bats in his career and Correa has roughly 1300 at bats.... but he wants to compare the at bats from when Correa was 20 to the at bats Bregman is getting as a 23 year old. My point being Correa is younger and a superior player to the older Bregman.
I've defended Luhnow and Crane since the trade deadline, but given the free fall the team is in and the SP struggles, it would be indefensible to not trade for Verlander. Either Luhnow really does love his prospects too much or Crane is truly a cheap ass. Verlander is worth every penny.
Verlander goes 8 innings and gives up zero runs against the Pirates while we throw McHugh out there and he gives up 5+ runs in 6 innings against the freaking White Sox. Best record in the AL is falling quickly and we're sitting on our hands because we have guys who might turn into something 3 years from now. But hey, at least Lunhow "tried" to get deals done.
Yup if this doesn't sound any alarms with the front office then nothing will. We are getting our ass handed to us by the worst offense in the AL. Even just to get morale up, they have to do something and that something have to be Verlander. I will be livid if they let this season go down the drain.
McHugh goes 6 IP 1 ER twice in a row, in his 2nd and 3rd starts of the season. Jose Quintana loses 3 straight, giving up 11 ER over 17 IP. Luckily we didn't trade the future away for a guy who isn't even as good as our in-house options. Or wait, were you someone who said "Verlander is the only player I want--all other SPs won't be helpful to this team because I know what Verlander will do" ?
No, I'm one of the people that said I don't want Quintana for the price it will take to get him. I wanted Sonny Gray. I wanted Gerrit Cole. I thought Verlander was pretty much a no brainer. If you have the opportunity to get him, you do it. At the very least he can eat up innings. Regardless, Verlander is the only one on that list we can go out and get NOW, but we're sitting around watching the freaking White Sox beat us.
If the Astros lose in the first round of the playoffs the Astros will lose a lot of fans. Doing nothing to get Verlander will be remembered just like the Oilers loseing to Buffalo in the playoffs.
Well, if we have to move guys like Bregman, Martes or Fisher to add guys like Addison Reed, when other teams picked them up for much less, then yea You are right, I don't know But....if we don't have anyone other than guys like Bregman, Martes and Fisher that could fetch guys like Addison Reed and the other relievers that were moved, we may have bigger problems than we thought
Keuchel hasn't been the same since injury, McCullers is seeing a back specialist, and we all crowned McHugh #3 before he even came back and now hes choking to the White Sox. 2 of our top 3 pitchers just got shelled by the worst team in the AL. But why worry? It's early, plenty of more games to continue downward... Maybe getting someone at the deadline wouldn't have helped us win these games by the people involved, but does anyone else get the sense that on the mental side of things since the deadline it looks low?
Guess you weren't at minute maid in 2014. hype dies fast in this town and if you take a step back the fair weather fans do too.
How are you extrapolating "key part" when I said, "clearly a part of a much larger whole." Do you not understand the concept of many parts equaling a whole? On Osweiler, I'll say only that at no time did I ever say a four-year veteran was a rookie, and trying to claim that I diid, stripped of any context, is a flaccid gotcha with absolutely no substance or credibility. In terms of Bregman/Correa - I have no idea what you're even arguing... when did I say Bregman = Correa? I'm merely contextualizing how good Alex Bregman has been and how his ascension has changed the narrative around his being traded as a means to demonstrate the risk of trading young prospects. His age isn't really a relevant component of that - but if it provides you a semblance of solid ground to stand on in this discussion, I guess keep pounding on it. Have fun.
First of all, Nook, let's respect the use of user names I never mentioned Sale; you re-contextualized it by pointing out Sale was often the target. I was referencing the many *this season* that called for him to be traded ("There were a lot of people, into this year, who championed trading Alex Bregman.") Hell, I was one of them; I mentioned kicking the tires on what he might be able to get us, in terms of SP, as I've also long-championed this team needing more of it.
