Perhaps they moved Aoki to open a place for Fisher as well as clear another 40 man space. Who said the had to move his salary?
I don't know if Crain could be talked into taking on a Verlander deal, especially if the option vests. I know Verlander wasn't something Luhnow was willing to do at the deadline because he wanted some payroll flexibility going forward. Most likely Luhnow would have to give Detroit better prospects to get them to take on a larger portion of Verlander's deal to appease the Astros budget limitations. Would Luhnow do that? Who can say for sure. As for Liriano, the Astros gave up a solid prospect for a very mediocre player and Toronto taking on the salary of Aoki. It isn't that the Astros ownership won't spend any money, they just have a budget and Luhnow is expected to follow it. We don't know if Crain will go beyond that for special situations or not as it hasn't come up yet.
Gotta say, it's impressive how quickly the Luhnowitalls switched from "we have more starting pitching than we know what to do with" to "we're doomed anyway so it's pointless to trade for starting pitching."
I feel Keuchel continues down this path, I don't see the Astros signing him to a long term big dollar contract. Which means we better have Martez and Whitley in the fold. I hate, hate that we did not pony up for sonny gray for the present and future. This Keuchel fiasco just further goes to show how we badly it at the trade deadline. If there was a way to land him while keeping Martez and Whitley, we should have done it.
If Keuchel is FUBAR, is trading for Verlander really gonna fix it? Do we just swap him in for Dallas' spot in the rotation? It's ridiculous. You give Dallas more chances to get his **** together, because if he's his 2016 self rather than his 2015 self there's not anything in the world that will rectify that.
I was typing on an I-Phone that automatically changes "Crane" to "Crain". It also changes "bobrek" to "boob rest".
Who said not to give Dallas K more chances? If he doesn't have discomfort or they don't feel it is something helped by rest, of course you run him out there again in the hope he improves. Having said that, he didn't look good at all. His fastball was 2 mph down from early this season to start the game a 4 mph down by inning 3. He had terrible command/control as well. It is alarming based on his past. Does Verlander solve anything? Well if he pitches like an ace, he likely does, but what is the likelihood of that, and at what long term cost to the Astros. There is always risk, quietly Jose Quintana has been mediocre for the Cubs. It may be that Verlander for us is the Verlander that Detroit had for the first 40-50 games.
I'm probably more pissed than anyone here that we didn't make a move....I just want one title before I leave this earth Having said that, Verlander isn't an ace anymore and that contract could keep us from adding needed pieces the next couple of years Unless Detroit is picking up a lot of that long term money, he isn't good enough you take that chance
I just don't see it that way at all. Aoki was on his way to being DFA'ed. Fisher is a way better player than aoki. Period. It was time to move on from aoki whether he was traded or not. Everyone is anxious right now with the lack of moves and us hitting our low point in the season. As a fan it is much more fun to hope for the turn around and think of the positives. For example...it is much better that this is happening in august and not September or October. I think the chances are better that keuchel and McCullers return to form than they don't. Our offense when we get correa and springer back is the best lineup the MLB has seen and will see in a very long time. With all that said verlander would make me feel better, but I don't think it's fair to just say "money" is the issue. Money, age, years left, prospect cost. Look at it as a whole and not just this common doom and gloom narrative that the owner won't pay up bc honestly...it probably really isn't a smart move. Even though it will make us all feel better.
They could have cut Aoki at any time and played Fisher. Aoki was only on the Astros at deadline as Luhnow was worried no one would claim him. Luhnow didn't want to be stuck paying his salary. Based on how I read things, the way the Astros handled Aoki reeks of a team on a strict budget that Luhnow is trying to get every penny on the field. If the way I read things is correct, it would be very hard to make prospect for player deals unless other team's owner is willing to pickup salary.
Yep, Jose Quintana has been very Jose Quintana since that first start for the cubs. And the only world beater he has faced shelled him.
Sonny Gray is gonna be exposed in yankee stadium. I don't think anyone is scared of sonny gray in the playoffs. IF they even get there. While I think he would have sured us up...and made us all instantly happy we made a move...who knows what the cost really was for dealing within the division. Not trying to be too much of a homer, but trying to rationalize this a little.
Fangraphs article on Verlanders trade value: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/getting-the-tigers-a-real-prospect-for-justin-verlander/ They matched my earlier conclusion that ~$30M is the right amount for Detroit to include if they want good prospects in return. And F Perez matches the value of the headliner they describe. I think F Perez and Y Alvarez for Verlander and $30M, with Verlander getting $3M added to his 3rd year buyout, makes sense for everyone. Astros get a potential ace and morale boost right when they need it most without giving up any of their very top prospects, Detroit gets 2 guys with elite ceilings, and Verlander gets a shot at a ring and $3M.
Not one team in the MLB takes on verlander without Detroit taking on salary. Everyone has a budget. Trying to get every penny? Duh, that's his job. I thought it was very clever and savvy the way he was moved both opening a spot for fisher AND getting a player back. Even though he sucks so far. Teoscar...nobody is gonna miss him. Very LJ hoes imo.
Article says an "additional" 30 million for Detroit to include if they want good prospects. 20 million is needed to just get Verlander off the team without prospects. So if Detroit wants Perez, it would take Detroit paying about 50 million of his 64 million left.
That's not how I read it, but if that's what they meant then I disagree. And if that's what they meant there's also no point in even discussing it since there's zero chance Detroit would even consider throwing in that much money.
That doesn't change that Aoki's inclusion in deal was to keep his remaining salary off the books. Astros could have opened up a spot for Fisher at any time by cutting Aoki. The question is whether they could have afforded Liriano if Aoki's salary wasn't included.
