the Gawker case established you can be liable for publishing information that was knowingly obtained illegally but this isn't even about that, the reporters wouldn't be prosecuted for publishing, they would be prosecuted for not providing evidence in a criminal investigation into whomever committed the crime of leaking classified information
I think these leaks are dangerous. They might make other leaders guarded about what they will say or unwilling to talk at all. So the leaks are a problem. Whoever leaked them should be held accountable. That being said the easiest remedy would be to get Trump out of the Whitehouse. There are leaks in every administration but Trump has encouraged such infighting amongst his administration that they are too happy to leak stuff that might damage whoever their enemy is that day. In addition Trump lies so much and says such stupid things that people may feel the need to leak information to show he was lying, or expose how idiotic the guy is.
These leaders are probably laughing. The Mexican people are laughing as Trump just game their president a political blow job begging for him to make him look good. American is led by a monkey. I dare say I hope this is America's most embarrassing moment.
They may be laughing at it, and it seems more and more common for other nation's leaders to laugh at the United States under Trump. That also won't stop them from altering what they talk about in future conversations. How awful Trump is, and how is an embarrassment and laughing stock doesn't change the fact that these kinds of leaks aren't helpful to governing even with Trump as the President.
The more important issue is why the leaks are happening. Trump is a bold faced liar and has no qualms about it. Trump needs secrecy to implement that kind of agenda. Who knows what kinds of dastardly, unethical, and even illegal things Trump would be attempting without the threat of leaks. This is the quandary of electing a pathological liar and an ignorant buffoon to such a powerful office.
I think it depends on when it becomes whistle-blowing vs. leaking to just embarrass somebody or that kind of stuff.
Some leaks are a good thing, even if they are, legally-speaking, a criminal act. Journalists shouldn't reveal their sources if they choose to publish the information. And if they need to accept some jail time as a consequence of that, so be it. That's the risk they took.
