Fun video, but a little bit more ominous for the football team itself, which will be reporting to August camp in a few days. Tom Herman's hellish August camp is a brutal mix of violent play and all-out effort, which resulted in numerous concussions and other traumatic injuries for UH last August. It got to the point where the UH players were tired of seeing their teammates on the other side of the ball. The result? A massive upset over #3 Oklahoma in the first game of the season.

Tom Herman: Texas practicing '10 times' harder than spring

Tom Herman has continually preached you can’t learn much from watching a football team in just shorts and jerseys, especially not this early. But one thing you can learn is energy level.

And he felt that was an area the Longhorns could take some pride in on Tuesday,Texas’ second preseason practice of the season.

“We are practicing without pads — just from a positivity standpoint — practicing without pads 10 times better than we did in the spring and much better than anyplace I’ve ever been,” Herman told reporters after practice.

Herman believes he can thank two things for that quick boost. First, there’s his team’s buy-in, which he has consistently said has been much better than expected since he arrived at Texas. But that’s only half of it. There’s also the work strength coach Yancy McKnight has done, which has gotten the Longhorns stronger and noticeably increased their stamina.

Collectively, Texas lost 500 pounds of fat and gained 380 pounds of lean muscle mass, the always-prepared Herman said on Monday. Those results are already making their way to the practice field.

“That’s attributed to the guys that are buying in, going hard, but also the functional leg strength and hip strength they have to stay up and using our hands,” Herman said. “That all ties together. so we’re going really, really hard and really fast without pads on because everyone is staying up and staying into it.”

There’s a lot still to be discovered about Texas, a lot of which won’t come until the season starts on Sept. 2. But even one day into preseason practices, Herman saw a drastic improvement. Whether it was “first practice jitters” or some other nerves, he doesn’t know, but there was a welcomed change.

“We challenged them to go have some fun and let loose,” Herman said. “Are we going to be a buttoned up outfit, absolutely is what I told them.

“But we’re going to have fun with our teammates. What we do is too hard not to have fun and make it fun everyday. I think they responded to that challenge and I saw smiles on their faces.

Texas will add shoulder pads on Wednesday before having their first practice in full pads on Friday. Saturday will mark the Longhorns first preseason scrimmage of the season.

Day 2 is in the books for Texas football. HornsDigest.com caught up with head coach Tom Herman following practice for his thoughts on the Longhorns performance in fall camp.

*** Herman was pleased with the amount of energy at Tuesday's practice. He felt the team had some "fall camp jitters" during Monday's practice, so he challenged the guys to go out and have more fun at Day 2.

*** The Longhorns have practiced without pads 10-times better than the team did in the spring, and "much better than any place" where Herman has coached.

*** Kirk Johnson was sidelined with a hamstring issue Tuesday. Herman hopes he will return to practice early next week barring any setbacks.

*** Patrick Vahe has been doing "great" all summer and is bringing it in fall camp. Herman said he is the starting left guard as it currently stands.

*** Patrick Hudson has all of the physical tools, the want-to and the drive, but is still working to get used to the speed of the game. Hudson is "up there" among the strongest guys on the team, along with DT Poona Ford.

*** Herman is looking for consistency at right tackle between Tristan Nickelson and Denzel Okafor. Nickelson is always in the right spot and on the right person, but is "physically limited at times" and struggles with executing at the point of attack. Herman described Okafor as a "fluid, long athlete" with strength and power, but the speed of the game is still a challenge, similar to Hudson.

*** DeShon Elliott has grown "leaps and bounds" since Herman's arrival. The head coach felt Elliott was more concerned with being liked than being a leader, but he has stepped up and has become more vocal with the team.

*** Gary Johnson "can really run" and is a "sideline-to-sideline, blitz the quarterback kind of guy." Though he wants him to add some mass, Herman said Johnson will "have a role" because of his speed and hitting ability.

*** Herman is not pleased with the NCAA rules changes for 2017, where the month of August is now a recruiting dead period. He believes the new rule hurts recruiting since high schools start fall practice later than colleges, which allowed for prospects--especially those within driving distance--to attend fall practice and/or scrimmages before they start practice with their high school team.

Numbers prove McKnight has already done insane work at Texas

In his short tenure with Texas, strength coach Yancy McKnight has already turned quite a few heads.

Chris Daniels took to Twitter to show off his massive weight loss earlier this month. At Big 12 Media Days, Connor Williams said he lost 19 pounds of fat and gained 12 pounds of lean muscle. But they weren’t the only ones to see a dramatic change.

After Texas’ first preseason practice on Monday, Tom Herman told reporters that, as a team, the Longhorns collectively lost “500 pounds of body fat and added 380 pounds of lean muscle mass.” On top of that, they improved several of their testing numbers.

“This is night and day,” Herman said. “We read off a bunch of stats last night from Coach McKnight. We shed 500 pounds of body fat and added 380 pounds of lean muscle mass as a team since January. We’ve increased our team average vertical jump by an inch and a half, which across the whole team is pretty significant. Back squat maxes increased 70 pounds per person, so some guys were up 40, some guys 100 in eight months.”

The examples of McKnight's work are seen across Texas' roster and Herman has already seen a noticeable difference after just one practice. His players aren't as tired after a few practice periods and he now sees an urgency in them he didn’t quite see in the spring.

“When you’re strong you can go bend, change direction and you don’t get tired,” Herman said. “When you’re weak, [by] period 12 I’m having a hard time changing direction, I’m having a hard time finishing plays. I saw a team that was running around very good in practice.”

It’s safe to say fans will probably see a much different-looking Texas team come the season opener on Sept. 2.

Strength Coach seems legit. I don't know what Charlie was doing. Maybe it's an issue of defensive schemes. Maybe Charlie wanted bigger nose tackle type DLman and Herman/Orlando want faster and leaner guys.

Bobby Burton Thoughts:

I spoke with someone following yesterday's practice and went through the lineup.

I specifically asked for position battles to watch and where the staff might believe there is a level of weakness, or perhaps positions where the incumbent starters have not made a move to solidify their spot.

-- At running back, Kyle Porter is the starter in part because Chris Warren was injured much of spring. The staff does not see this as a "battle" between the two as much as they are trying to get them both ready for starter snaps. This is not seen as a position of weakness on the team, nor is it a battle inasmuch as it is a need to keep the two top guys healthy and see where things really stand with Daniel Young when the pads come on and run drills are the focus. Toneil Carter also remains an option, especially in the passing game. Kirk Johnson is a wildcard.

- At one receiver spot, Jerrod Heard is penciled in as a starter. But it's tenuous I am told. Heard showed a penchant for being somewhat soft in the spring and was too often either unwilling or unable to get extra yardage after contact. Texas wants someone at the position who can do it all and there are questions whether Heard can do it all.

- I'm told Reggie Hemphill-Mapps will push for playing time behind Devin Duvernay, but that unlike the situation with Heard, this is more about getting another quality, reliable performer on the field.

- On the OL, I'm told it's still a wait-and-see situation. Jake McMillon and Connor Williams, barring injury, will start. Beyond that, Pat Vahe is ahead of others at one guard spot and looks the part. However, Zach Shackelford's ability, when healthy, to move around to different spots on the line, and the development of either (or both) Pat Hudson and Denzel Okafor could make things more interesting. Elijah Rodriguez and Tristan Nickelson will likely see some spot starts this season, but only after injuries from others. I am told that the OL could either be a team strength or team weakness depending on how the unit progresses. The Horns' staff truly doesn't quite know what they have because so much of it relies on the development of the true sophomores and a redshirt freshman.

- There's been a bunch of talk this off-season about Malik Jefferson. The reality is that Jefferson is going to be forced to fight for his job. I'm told productivity and consistency will win the day for whoever gets the job. And that also goes for Anthony Wheeler. Of all spots, on the defense, the places up for grabs most are the three LB spots, where Todd Orlando just has not found that perfect combination quite yet.

- I'm told Jeff McCulloch and Naashon Hughes will likely split time this season, that is until and unless McCulloch begins to play the power run better. Orlando is not going to allow McCulloch to try to sidestep oncoming blockers in the run game or play soft and reach.

-- In the secondary, the only even halfway open spot is Holton Hill's situation at corner. Hill is going to have to stave off Davante Davis. Kris Boyd appears to have separated himself from the others (in a good way).

- I want to add one more piece on the secondary. I was told the staff likes what they have in Antwuan Davis from a versatility perspective. If Texas goes to a dime package, he has the inside track on that, not Jason Hall, at least at this point.

Texas lands TE Dominick Wood-Anderson

Texas has landed the #1 JUCO TE in the nation over Alabama and Louisville in Arizona Western TE Dominick Wood-Anderson. He was all over the map and most thought Alabama had the edge going into today. Texas still plans to take two TE’s in 2018 so Mustapha Muhammad, Malcolm Epps, and Luke Ford are the top targets on the board.

Wood-Anderson is a December grad and will be at Texas in January. He is the 15th commit in Texas’ 2018 class.

Quick article on Wood-Anderson. He will fill a major need next year. Wood-Anderson, Leitao, Brewer, and one other TE recruit out of Muhammed, Ford, and Epps should finish off our TE need in 2018

I like Burton's take here because it doesn't feel overly optimistic. I'm excited to see what Herman and Orlando can put on the field, even if there's work to do at a few positions.

Think it's more of the latter. You don't lose to Kansas because they are bigger and stronger than you. Not to beat a dead horse but there were just so many WTF moments under Strong whether schemes, penalties, clock management, etc...

I don't think you're beating a dead horse. Some of us on here were critical of Charlie Strong's lack of attention to detail, and we were ridiculed for it.

Ya me being one of them, I don't really want to keep bashing a guy after both sides have moved on. But seeing how much Herman has accomplished in 8 months, hard not to look back at the last 3 years.

The before/after picks of the locker room alone show how far we had fallen behind in the arms race. Not sure if it would've been approved (likely a definite no from Patterson) under Strong but don't recall him pushing for any of this stuff either referring to it as "gadgets." But it's a new age in CFB (it actually has been for a while) so good to see Texas joining the times. Just gotta win some games now.

Those nice and fancy things better pay off on the field. If not, Herman should rip them down and install the old lockers, telling the players they only get new ones when they're worthy of it.
