I think this was more about his dealings with China and Russia than anything else. It's just weird that the Trump admin didn't vet him at all. Well, normal for them, but weird in the bigger picture.
Was this just Trump's way of saying to the Republicans "you ain't seen scary yet"? It's almost as if he brought in "The Mooch" to scare away Preibus and Spicer. They clearly fell for it. Trump now has another general (I love the generals; aren't they great? They're the best generals, the best.) next to him as his Chief of Staff. Trump is projecting himself to be the Commander-in-Chief of Commander-in-Chiefs. This is like a big military parade for him.
On China - he's selling his Skybridge Capital fund in a sweetheart deal (they are way overpaying) to a Chinese firm that has come under serious scrutiny.
