    Just listened to @The Cat 's podcast for July 29th. It's worth a listen. Most interesting strategy piece I've heard on why the Knicks should give Melo what he is asking for. If Melo stays in New York and opts in, they'd be on the hook for 50+ million. If the Knicks won't send him to Houston and he's not going to make that much elsewhere, why not opt in and enjoy New York, the place you're from? This could mean another summer of not having the money to land the guy you're after. So, it might make sense to move him regardless of losses. A short term loss could definitely help them going forward. Anyway, Ben lays it all out here:

    The problem with Ben's strategy is that he assumes the Knicks are being offered commensurate salary relief. Perhaps they are, but we don't know that. It's possible that no deal has been presented that actually gets them cap space next year.

    It has to be close to be at trade (125%). Think the bigger problem going from 2 yrs of Melo to 3 yrs or Ryan.

    Not to continue to be all negative but that is a very poor assumption. The Knicks aren't going to be receiving expiring deals if Melo is getting traded to us.
