Perhaps... and I guess the same could be said of Darvish, although he's a free agent to be. To be honest, as much as I know they need more pitching help, I still don't think either Gray or Darvish would have been worth more than one of the top 5 guys. But hearing that they were close to "big" deals and had it all fall apart on them (which again, a lot of this could be posturing towards the clubhouse to keep morale up).... has me slightly concerned for future war-time trigger pulling, given that everybody expects this team to stay in the thick of the hunt till whenever they start to lose these guys to free agency.
What's with the tude? All I'm saying, and Lunhow even confirmed, that the price for these guys came down a bit. With all of the rankings and publications out there, I think our 2nd-3rd tier prospects rank right up there with the ones who were traded today
Nick I agree with everything you just stated. I've used the analogy from "The Godfather" where Michael Corleone tells Tom Hagen "you're out....you're not a wartime consigliere". Coming up dry today (where other GM's were able to pull off deals that didn't even require their top prospects on players the 'Stros were also interested in) shows me there's cause for concern on whether he is a "wartime consigliere".
We have zero dependable starters at this point. We might win a 100 games and lose in the 1st round. We better hope that Dallas and Lance get healthy.
Why couldn't we make a move ? Looking at what other teams have up , our front office should have been more than willing to part with equivalent prospects . Were teams asking more because we have more ? Were teams asking more because it was intra division ( a's and Rangers)? Were teams asking more because lunhow has rubbed them the wrong way? Or were we not willing to give up equivalent prospects ? It works both ways. Maybe DK and McCullers are not going to be good for the rest of the season in which case adding another good starter would have been a waste . But maybe one of them (or both) get back into a groove and winning and losing depends on that 2nd/3rd guy .
A lesser lineup nearly took out the eventual WS champs 2 years ago with essentially the same top 3 rotation guys and a bullpen that was just as unreliable. But because all we got was Liriano this season is essentially over and Jeff Luhnow, the same guy who built the current roster to a 16 game division lead, is the worst GM in baseball according to this thread. Lmao.
I'm disappointed we didn't make a move for a bullpen guy but at the end of the day some of the names we were tied to didn't go to anyone else either. To say we suck or Lunhow is a loser is clearly stupid. Getting healthy is going to be even more important but at or near full strength this team is as good any one else. They've demonstrated that. Also the clubhouse thing is completely overblown. These guys believe in themselves and their ability to win. I'm sure there's some disappointment we didn't make a move, but lingering effects or a bad lockerroom is a non issue.
Pretty sure nobody is saying that. Luhnow himself is disappointed that they didn't get a bigger deal done. The fans have every right to be disappointed in his ability, or lack thereof, to get big deals done. Of course they can still win the whole damn thing... but as Jeff said, even the slightest improved odds in the playoffs make any potential move worth it.
No, Morey speak is closer to: "We're glad we were able to add some talent around our guys, happy it worked out, sucks we had to send out some tube socks and an old bat to get it done tho."
If Dallas and Lance aren't pitching well, Sonny Gray wasn't going to win us a WS anyway. Their health and performance (along with Correa's and Springer's) was always way more important than a trade/non-trade.
i find it very hard to believe that we couldn't do something more... especially seeing what the Dodgers and Yankees did. Having said that, Britton didn't get traded and while Wilson would have been nice, I don't know how much that really helps in the big picture. We could still see a Verlander deal happen but you are really rolling the dice with him too. A lot of what the Astros do or don't do this year will be based on the health of Kuechel, McCuellers and Correa.
So instead, you type in bold, big letters and denigrate fans who are a little more than disappointed that they didn't make a bigger deal to bolster their World Series chances?? I've been a die-hard Houston sports fan for all 34 years I've been on this Earth. I've spent my hard-earned money at the stadium, bought the gear, cheered til I was hoarse, cried when they lost, and have basically been there every single step of the way. I'm still going to do all those things, but you're goddamned right I'm more than disappointed in Luhnow for getting bamboozled at the last second. This season has a very real possibility of being special (it still does), but those chances took a MASSIVE hit today with all our competitors getting better around us. To say anything less would be disingenuous. But here's the difference between you and me.....I'm not going to blast you for feeling differently than I am. Edit: **** you, @dandorotik !!!
I don't know, there are posts above that we need a new GM because Luhnow didn't land anyone. Pretty funny stuff.
That's not necessarily true. Cleveland was able to garner a 3-1 lead in the World Series with a fully decimated starting rotation... in large part due to the salvage deals they made at the deadline. Gray being available next year as well was going to be a great part of the deal for now, and the future.... and who knows, maybe they sign him to an extension if he's healthy. In the end, we don't know what Oakland was charging for the Astros vs. the Yankees. Beane knows the ins/outs of our system just as much as anybody elses.... and probably liked the upside of Mateo more than anything Luhnow was willing to give him.
I have no way to know obviously, as none of us do I get the feeling that Luhnow always feels like he is the smartest guy in the room though. Think he always feels he will get others to think what he is saying is right...meanwhile others swoop in and get deals done while he is still trying to talk them down He is great at a lot of the parts of his job....needs to figure out the trade deadline. Obviously we are still one of the top teams, but most teams that win it all add at the deadline to upgrade their weaknesses
Y'all need to chill. Let the Astros get healthy and let's see how Liriano does. He literally can't be any worse than he's been and he's a lefty specialist now. Y'all act like we don't have one of the better pitching staffs and lineup.
