Like I said, nothing complicated about it. The Marlins won a World series using that strategy. Looks like Crane and Lunhow are using that framework.

Disappointing sure, especially when the other contenders made moves to get better. But I'm gonna try and remain a glass half-full type guy. We got Liriano to bolster the bullpen and don't forget that McHugh is back as well. That essentially amounts to a trade deadline deal and we didn't have to give up anything. This team just needs to get healthy, so I'm trying not to care too much what happens between now and October, so long as they protect their division lead and punch a ticket. We can afford to continue to be conservative with guys that suffer even a slight injury, and if we can make it back to full strength by the time the playoffs begin, we'll have as good of a chance as anyone.

...Course if our starters keep going down and can't give the team 6+ innings regularly, the bullpen isn't gonna find it's groove again cause they'll continue to be overworked.

...But if our younger guys become disappointed that no bigger deals were made, this is where maybe veterans like Beltran and McCann, veterans we didn't have in years past, will help to keep the clubhouse focused on the bigger picture.

Dodgers and Yanks took big steps forward, and we ended up with Liriano... disappointing.

    Too much moneyball.

This was the year to go all in. With how the contenders got stronger, we are no longer a lock in the playoffs. That has to affect morale in the clubhouse, esp. the young stars still waiting to win it all and/or get the big paycheck.

Astros need a war time GM. Can't wait for all the "well, we tried to make moves but didn't want to part with key prospects" just to watch those prospects drive down their value for next year's trade deadline (i.e. Reed/Musgrove).

It is true that he did much better in the first half of 2014, however; in 2013, he did much better in the second half than he did in the first. So, in the two years prior to the trade, he performed better in the first half once, and better in the second half once.

What's the Astros equivalent. I'm sure we would have had to pay a premium over this.

Sigh...disappointed. I don't feel confident going into the post season with this bullpen. Even if the offense does their jobs this bullpen will just blow the lead the way they have been trending for several weeks.

At some point the guys from the farm have to be able to play in the big leagues, or they do you no good

Yu had a horrible start last time out, era was mid 3s before that one start

They had a pretty similar team last year. Their main guys weren't playing as well. Reddick and McCann didn't result in the bulk of a 30 game improvement.

Teams have down years despite solid cores. The Cubs regressed slightly. So did the Indians. Every year cannot be taken for granted.

Also, there's no guarantee that other teams don't improve next year and give them more competition... namely the Yankees who have both cash and a strong enough farm.

Are we winning? Yes.. But just like the Texans winning the AFC South, that doesn't make us a playoff threat. We are 2-7 against the indians and Red Sox, both of whom added talent. The Yanks weren't too far behind and they added a ton of talent. Then, after we basically do nothing by the trade deadline, we instead announce that our struggling #2 pitcher is headed to the DL. You have to laugh.. Joke.

Dodgers got Darvish for the equivalent of Fisher, M Sierra, and H Perez. That's nothing.

And which of those seasons should be more important in the 2015 evaluation? People saw that coming from Kazmir it was no surprise
