I had the ability to look at how Kazmir faired in the second half of seasons... It showed he would suck... And he did... Gomez and Fiers are fine but not WS push level... No miller or chapman
To be honest, the lack of media pressure in this city that allowed them to suck intentionally for 3 straight years is also a reason why there isn't a lot of excess urgency to make or not make a deal. Not to say that he wouldn't do the same thing in a more pressurized market, but he'd certainly have to face tougher day-in/day-out criticism.
Lunhow's method got us here. Disappointing result today, but you have to trust Lunhow's judgement. Maybe they felt Martes can be a shut down guy, or feel that strongly about Tucker. Who knows. He was clear he wouldn't overpay and overpay he did not.
And the Yankees got him for a guy who just suffered a torn patella tendon and another pitcher who just underwent TJ surgery. Hard to think that a Fisher/Alvarez/Perez type deal (or less) couldn't top that, but yeah yeah, I know, maybe the A's liked the gimpy guys better.
Neithe did the Yankees for Gray... Who says he has to overpay? How about just pay? Last 3 trade deadlines have been ****. Others make pushes to win a WS we don't do ****.
Nothing complicated about sucking hard for 3 years. batting .300 with your first round picks and refusing to trade prospects. That got Hinkie fired in Phili.
Mateo is a high upside guy, but the other two guys, despite being loved as prospects, clearly have serious medical red flags.
That's fine. If you can't pay the price during a season where you have the best chance in franchise history to win it all, yet you still have room for improvement especially in pitching, you will likely never pay the price. Last year, they weren't close enough in the division race (even though the WC was right there). This year, they're too far ahead to be worried. Certainly some circuitous logic.
Batting 300 puts you in the hall of fame. It's also much easier to mask a bust in baseball when you have 40 other picks to make up for it.
Did we have an extra roster slot available? Or is this temporary while waiting for Liriano to report to the team? Interesting that Reed got the call, though -- he's been on a roll.
Well. They are going to have the same team next year and it's possible they binge on a free agent this offseason while retaining their top prospects. It's really not to far fetched. When this team is healthy, they are the best team in baseball. I don't think a guy like Darvish with a 4 plus era is going to move the dial much for the dodgers.
