The Astros have to have a different mindset than those big spending clubs. The Astros are a team that builds from within while those larger market type teams continually spend big money on free agents. The Astros just can compete with the type of money the Yankees throw around for example. The farm system is everything to the Astros.
Luhnow can get the girl to the dance...he just can't get laid. Here's to hoping our pitchers get healthy and find a groove again.
Awful job by Luhnow. I hope it doesn't affect our team's morale too much. Two of your best players demanded you get them help and you add a crappy Liriano. Ugh!!!
The thing about prospects though is that your can replenish them in the draft and even in later trades before you get to that 4-5 year window. Can understand overpaying not good. But our pace this year is not one you can count on repeating itself. And depending on Fiers, Morton, Sipp to get you to the WS is not the move. How often do you have that type of opportunity.
The Yankees got a LOT better over the last 10 days. Their bullpen is a monster and their rotation is now better than Houston's. For Luhnow to stand pat against that, especially considering Houstons farm and which prospects ended up changing hands in other trades, its shameful.
You're acting like once everyone comes back, it'll be back to business as usual. That's not how this works, dude. It's not a video game. These guys are tired, burned out, and just flat out BAD right now (talking about the bullpen mainly). Nothing is going to guarantee that they get back to pitching at the rate they were before. By the way, I for one CAN'T WAIT for Sonny Gray to smoke our asses in Game 3 of the first round.
Statements like this are so dumb. Be upset with not improving the team but Lunhow choked? How? Do you know what other teams were asking?
Everyone supporting this (basically) standing pat is ridiculous. I would bet any amount of money that it would be easier to replace those prospects in 4-5 years than repeat what we are doing this year in the same time frame. I'm pretty surprised he couldnt do any more. Really weak.
We have Martes, Fisher, Tucker, Perez, Whitley, Alvarez being added progressively over the next couple years to a team that currently has a 17 game lead. I'm not mad.
Hey at least we're not the Rangers. They're so stupid for not trading Yu. He would have gone a long way jump start their shitty farm system. Now they're either going to lose him for nothing or sign him to a massive deal to keep their trash ass team.
Look at the bright side. You can save your money to buy a car.No money will be spent on World Series tickets.
Even if Tucker/Whitley/Martes/Fisher were ALL untouchable, there is no excuse for not getting another number 3 or 4 starter and/or more bullpen help. I think the Astros could have gotten Gray for Martes and Fisher easily.
Every MLB team has issues. The team that gets everything to pan out for them will win it all. Even the Dodgers have to worry about Kershaw's back.
I am shocked at the number of homers in here. This is an epic fail. Bullpen is the 22nd ranked bullpen in baseball. Starting rotation is falling apart at the seams. And Luhnow brings in Francisco Liriano. This has been my biggest complaint with Luhnow his entire tenure. He's a great GM and I would never suggest firing him. But he has an inability to make good, big trades. The Gomez deal was a bust. Same with Kazmir. All his good trades have involved young prospects, which is great when you are building. But now we have built and it's time to swing for the ****ing fences not try and hit a single!
The Astros will be a team that will max out in the mid-tier range as far as payrolls go so they need to be smart with their prospects if they want to continue to contend through the years. There is no way they will be able to afford Springer, Correa, and Altuve all on this team so they will need to pick the one or two they want to keep on. The Astros already have a team that's good enough to get to the world series and win it. Adding another pitcher would have helped but there is no guarantee that we would win it.
