Not in those words, but vast majority of farm system is consolidated into 5 players. I've seen trades proposed that include 3 out of the 5. Even though modern usage has watered down the meaning of decimation some from its origins (ten percent), I think removing 3 of the top prospects would meet those words (frankly, 2 should do it as well).
There's a chance 2 out of those 5 become busts anyway. Holding on to them and not selling high is a gamble in and of itself.
2 of 5 busting is generous. More like 4.5 of 5 will bust or at very least not live up to ceiling. Look at what came in between correa and Bregman. They were one year apart but I bet we went through, what, ten prospects?
I didn't say Clutchfans, it's mainly social media. I already read a few tweets on Twitter wanting Luhnow to step down.
I really wouldn't be surprised at all if Lunhow decided to stand pat at the end of the day. Doing so would be seen as a vote of confidence in the guys who have performed well all season but only recently begun to struggle. With that being said, I would be extremely disappointed if we entered the last stretch of the season with Tony Sipp still as our best lefty reliever. He has seriously been hot garbage for two years now.
Agreed. If we go to war with the staff we have I fear we won't get out of the first round. I am not sure I trust anyone in our pen with a 1 run lead. Also our potent offense is no guarantee in the postseason. We got blanked save for a meaningless home run yesterday. We are going to face some tough pitching in the playoffs. We may be limited to scratching out 3 or 4 runs. Who on our staff can limit another team to less than that? DK going 8 and Giles closing the door? Then who?
Astros trades/lack of trades to improve the team has been a huge disappointment the last few seasons. Frustrating watching other teams go out there and make moves while we sit pat.
So, in 2015, they went out and made a couple of pretty big trades. So, were the results what was disappointing? It's hard to have it both ways. They didn't make a trade - disappointing. They made trades which seemingly improved the team at the time, but in hindsight, they didn't work out - disappointing.
Word is, last year the clubhouse was less than thrilled at the lack of aggressiveness. I'm sure some guys like Bregman and Musgrove may be more at ease by not being traded... but for the most part, the vets will realize there are some deficiencies that they'd welcome improvement towards. And the young stars will realize that they want a front office that will take their careers into account now just as much as the careers of prospects 3-4 years from now.
You can't ignore the effect not having Springer AND Correa is having on the offense...which can have secondary effects on the pitching staff.
I really hope the less-than-ideal trades of 2015 aren't preventing them from making moves now. Very few have mourned the loss of Megden, Phillips, Hader, and Santana... especially as it pertains to the MLB team.
Yeah I was being generous. Remember when they were holding on to AJ Reed? Even though he is hitting well now in the minors, now no one wants him.
Both trades seemed very reasonable at the time. Astros were also a much worse team that was much easier to upgrade. I still expect Astros to make a trade, but they can't force other team to accept a reasonable offer.
2015 was disappointing, but none of that can be blamed on the front office. I applaud Luhnow for going for it and making those deals, even if they didn't pan out as we hoped.
Almost 3 hours left. Only things that are being discussed through sources are: Gray to Yanks Kintzler to Nationals Darvish to Dodgers/Indians/Astros Britton to Dodgers/Indians/Astros
Would it really take that? It may take one of them. Word is, they're all off-limits... which could prevent any deal.
Funny you are disappointed with those trades.. How are the prospects we gave up doing? Also, one of the pitchers we got is pretty much our current ace.
What moves did you want to make? 2015, we tried to get Hamels. Wouldn't waive his no trade for us. We made a big move to boost the rotation and get what we thought was an all-star outfielder (Fiers + Gomez). We also picked up a rental SP (Scott Kazmir). 2016, we made a big offseason move to get Ken Giles. 2017, we traded for McCann, signed Reddick, Beltran, and Morton over the offseason. We have the 2nd best record in baseball going into the trade deadline. The team with the best record, the Dodgers, haven't exactly made a move yet. They've traded away Jason Wheeler and Sergio Romo, and acquired Todd Cunningham and Luis Ysla -- all while Clayton Kershaw, Brandon McCarthy, and Adrian Gonzalez.
