I recently retired. The marketplace in Minnesota is $28,000+/year for similar coverage for my wife and I. The bronze plan is still around $24,000.

    COBRA is around $1400/month.

I assume you're not 65 yet and eligible for Medicare. COBRA doesn't distinguish your age and income from other employees so I suppose that's where the difference lies.

Right. It's just amazing comparing COBRA now vs. the marketplace. In the older days, COBRA was way more expensive than the marketplace.

For some employers COBRA will be based on their age. There are some health plans under 50 that don't have composite rates still since Texas took so long to implement that in order to make ACA hurt

The subsidies for the poor absolutely have to go. Of course the insurance companies don't want that aspect repealed. That would be a huge cut in their business. They are getting rich on taxpayer money so that those poor who cannot or will not obtain health insurance on their own dime can be covered.

The loser in all this? The average responsible middle class taxpayer who has seen their employer-provided insurance plans go into the crapper (higher deductibles, higher premiums, less coverage) and who could not qualify for subsidies if they tried.

Subsidies for the poor cost taxpayers dollars, but that doesn't cause premiums to go up. Nice try, though.

Why stop there? Government resources are going towards the elderly who weren't responsible enough to save more money for retirement.

Meanwhile... wasting good money (and political currency) after bad, Trump continues to flog the "repeal affordable healthcare" dead horse... instead of jobs, infrastructure, taxes, homeland security, etc. The crazy man is so obsessed with attacking Obama's legacy that he will hurt the government and American people no matter what...

Kind of off topic but my wife is a Teacher here in Texas and under the new TRA plan, thanks to our great governor Abbott, and senators like Ted Cruz her Pension plan was trashed this Spring, and on healthcare for her to cover herself and our child it would be $1,500 a month on the basic PPO plan. That's nearly half a paycheck for most teachers in Texas.

I really really really hate Texas politicians, and if you follow how the GOP works, usually Texas politics are a good sign of where the politics nationally are going under the GOP. We are in for a real treat with Trumpcare AKA Wealthcare AKA Repeal and go F Yourself.

That sucks! Sorry to hear about that. These guys care very little about their constituents, sadly.

Trump is so obsessed with overturning Obama's landmark affordable healthcare act that he doesn't care what pain and suffering results...

A close friend of ours retired from teaching in the Spring and she has gone from not particularly caring about politics, to being royally pissed off at the GOP legislature, Abbot, and Patrick for the reasons you mentioned (and a lot of other poor treatment of our teachers that you didn't mention and are no doubt aware of), and just as ticked off at trump for who he appointed as Sec. of Education - a woman who is both an extremist and unqualified for the job.

One of the most important jobs in the country, teaching our kids, and they continue to be treated like crap. Particularly in Texas. I'm ashamed of our state government. That's coming from someone who's partner retired not that long ago after 30+ years working for the same legislature, most of the time as an executive. She had had enough of the bullshit. It didn't use to be like it is today. The Texas Lege has become a disgrace.

Thanks. Luckily I can cover them on mine but it's not much better given that I have a massive surcharge under United where if my spouse has "provided" coverage I'm penalized for bringing them on mine. It's complete crap but that's just the insurance hell a lot of us live in.

But I would encourage everyone here to read up on what happened to the TRS (Texas teacher benefits program) this past May because it's a paints a clear picture of how the GOP wants to model these programs. Abbott led the charge there but also our wonderful Senators also waged war on our educators themselves.

But yes as Deckard points out, there has been a clear change of direction with public school teachers since Trump got elected because of Devos and the clear campaign to redirect funds to afford tax breaks essentially for rich people to get cheaper private school education. That's a totally different argument outside of Healthcare but it's still a huge issue. Even my wife's superintendent took a stand publicly and encouraged everyone in the community (a very historically red community) to call our reps and encourage them to vote no to Devos.

Tramp is doing what the Repugs have been promising for the last 7 years. People who don't pay attention to politics liked the complaining, but they weren't really paying attention until things started getting scary.

Perhaps as slight glimmer of hope... that the adults in the room (and amazingly, in this Congress) will work together on fixes...

Senator announces bipartisan health care hearing on Obamacare
btw, love the baseball analogy used by Republican Rep. McSally:

A bipartisan hearing after 7 months of trying to **** everybody over on their own failed.

    This isn't normal.
