Rich Hill has been good when healthy, especially last year following the trade. I'm hoping for Gray right now, though would prefer to not part with Tucker, Fisher, Martes, or Whitley which may not be feasible. The good news is while the Yankees are the most serious threat, Torres is considered untouchable (but maybe that changes with Gregorius having a great year), Clint Frazier currently in their regular lineup, and Dustin Fowler had that serious knee injury (Torres is also out for the year). That is less they have available. They can still put forth a good deal without those, but it isn't as easy for them. I hate to give them up, but Alvarez & Perez being the primary pieces is a deal I'd do.
I think you included his June 20th start against the Astros in your numbers. His 6 starts since then (hence: the last month) have been better than either of them. Peacock and Fiers have pitched brilliantly, that cannot be denied. The fact that Gray has been even better is what I was trying to point out. Edit: this is in reference to Astrofan59's post.
Rich Hill is also in Dodger Stadium now. He knows what locations pumps up his stats. Sonny Gray's home/away splits this year: Home: 10 starts, 5-2 W-L, 3.08 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, .208BAA, 0.578 OPS Away: 6 starts, 1-3 W-L, 4.04 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, .262 BAA, 0.751 OPS The game where the Astros tattooed him by the way was in Oakland, so his home numbers would be even better without having faced us. Away from home though (which coincidentally Oakland has tried to avoid doing the past month as they've lowered his ERA and pumped up his trade value), he's fairly mediocre, consistent with his season-long performances the past two years. Just want y'all Sonny Gray supporters to be ok with acquiring another Charlie Morton in exchange for all those prospects we'd have to give up...
Small sample sizes apply. Sonny Gray has spent his entire career in Oakland. Almost identical numbers, despite the fact that most players are better at home regardless.
Time to part with whatever for Michael Fuller. We are so close to the World Series. Honestly we have the potential to win it without any additions. We can't blow a 60% wad on a pitcher that represents stability in the rotation and someone that is probably not as good as Dallas or Lance. We need to go 100% Wad.get the player that represents stability and an upgrade at the top of the rotation. Stop f****** talking about longevity. The farm can take a hit and be fine. Leave the offensive lineup as is and work in Fisher. Keep Martes. I've personally seen enough nasty from him. I believe in him long term. Franklin Perez+Kyle Tucker+Teo would be close or no? I don't post often in here but read all the time this is the first year I've watched the majority of the games. Just my thoughts. I think we even need to make another large trade for a top in closer. Britton?
Not even close. They'd probably need a good mix of MLB ready players on top of Tucker/Perez. Fulmer is a 24 year old frontline starter. It'd look like: OF Tucker SP Martes SP Perez 3B Moran/Davis OF Hernandez
I'm not going to sit here and say I know a ton about Whitley but I would just want to keep Martes somehow. but I still think that that trade is exactly what you do in the situation that they're in.
If you're going to successfully pry a young, cost-controlled TOR stud like Fuller away from Detroit, there's no way Martes and Fisher (along with some combination of Bregman, Tucker and Whitley) aren't prominently involved.
You are correct, I did include his June 20th start, so I edited the post. But the same question still stands - what metric are you using? If it is ERA, xFIP or BB/9, Gray is the best. If it is FIP, the advantage is to Peacock who also has allowed the fewest HRs at zero. And Fiers has the best K rate of the group, almost 4 per 9 higher than Gray, giving him the best K%-BB% of the group by a wide margin. Also, Gray has the lowest BABIP, which indicates that there has been some luck to his, and to a much lesser degree Fiers, results. So again there is no doubt that Gray has been really good, but I also still see similar results overall.
Those are good points. I understand that our bullpen has been used a lot...to the tune of the 3rd most usage of any team in the league this season. Having starters who can't make it through 5 innings is taking a toll on bullpen arms. I'm also not convinced that Keuchel and/or McCullers are going to come back in full form...or that you can expect Peacock and/or Fiers to continue to perform at this level. I sure hope so. It would be great to see Fiers or Peacock holding the Indians to 3 hits and 1 run over 7 innings in a playoff game...but I don't think you can count on that. Most of us were ready to kick Fiers to the curb less than a month ago or so. I'm not saying sell the farm or anything like that. But if you can acquire someone to eat some innings, I think that's a good thing. The team has young depth at the major league level to work with. They have the luxury of being able to make a trade and it not gutting them.
Come on...let's be honest. You have a playoff game to start...based on totality of career....you'd rather have Peacock or Fiers than Sonny Gray on the mound? Really?
Lets see what McHugh can do. But between him, Peacock and Morton vs Gray, there is not a lot of separation in that group.
I love how before this year we wouldnt give Breg for Sale.. Now, we are looking at keeping everyone. In hindsight we should have gone for Sale. Stop stockpiling the farm, we are completely solid until 2020 with only Altuve and Keuchel coming up. I bet my left nut Lunhow is able to replace Tucker by then. I can already see ppl saying Whitley is untouchable. Someone tag this post so that we can come back in a year and see that everyone is offering Whitley (who has struggled in the higher A ball by this time) and JB Bauskas is untouchable... Don't you see? Lunhow is effing good at this. With all our injuries how can ppl want to stand pat. Throw the farm at Gray and a reliever and be done with it. Tho I would rather have degrom, I don't think he is available.
You have taken a comment about a 30 day period and applied it to the totality of career. And, of course, the conversation has nothing to do with who is the preference to start a playoff game. If it was, the analysis would involve such things as pitch and exit velocities, hit probabilities by park, etc. I would choose the guy that gave us the best chance to win, which is probably Gray, but it most certainly would not be made by name recognition. In short, your apples do not compare to my oranges.
I read a tweet from some baseball writer saying that the Astros view Whitley as untouchable. I have no idea if that's accurate, but if it is, that's insane.
Haha neither did I.. I was about to say if you are giving Peacock all this after his small sample then take away Grays small sample of bad and see how good he is.
