Yu is only under contract through the end of this season. So he won't get nearly the kind of return that Quintana did.
Quintana got 1 top prospect and 1 fringe Top 100 prospect plus a couple of flyers and has several more years of under contract. Tucker is probably viewed in the same tier or close to it as Jimenez. Whitley, Martes, and Fisher are all likely significantly more valued than Cease. Yu is under contract for 3 less years. Astros aren't trading Martes, Whitley, or Fisher for a rental.
Teams typically trade guys that they value less than the team receiving the player or prospect. The team trading a player or a prospect know the most about them, and teams are going try to trade someone that they think is going to start sucking in the near future or even long term. As such, traded players or prospects on average typically produce less than expected due to some of them being lemons versus similarly-valued prospects/players that aren't traded. Astros haven't really traded many high profile prospects and haven't received an abundance of MLB talent either. Sure, there are guys they could have traded before they lost value. There are also guys on MLB team that could have been traded for a lot less than they are currently worth.
Darvish by a a mile. eta: I'm just going to compare this to the Unit trade, I know markets are always different but anyway...for Darvish would you trade F. Perez (Garcia) JD Davis (Guillen) somebody Halama-level I sure as hell would.
a lot of words... still not sure exactly which side you're on. What would you like them to do over the next week?
Agreed... especially since Darvish going to another contender that the Astros may face in a short series instantly makes me upset.
Yeah you should look at the quintana deal again. He only got Jimenez, a top 10 player, and Cease, a top 75ish player. The other 2 were lottery tickets. That offer is more than what Q got, despite having more value. If he wasn't a FA this year and had a long injury history then it'd be different. I'm content watching the rangers lose him after the year for nothing and have a bad mlb team and bad farm system
Well, maybe not prospect cost, but we know that Verlander is not as good as Darvish, but he comes with control and probably cheaper prospects. Darvish will cost a lot of prospects and is a rental. So I asked because I wanted to see if it was more important to get the much better ace darvish for half a year and lots of prospects, or the lesser Verlander for less in prospects but more years.
Are you content with the Rangers trading him to the Red Sox, Yankees, or Indians? I feel the Rangers trading him is SOP for any big/small/mid market team with high priced FA to be talent that is out of it. The Red Sox and Yankees have gotten returns for Lester and Chapman... and have used some of the returns of those deals to be buyers again.
This is another factor that we need to consider. Sure our team looks solid in comparison to most teams now, but going against Sale/Price/Yu or Kershaw/Wood/Yu in a playoff series is not something anyone should be excited about with our current roster.
Darvish is worth more than Verlander, but hard to say when I don't know what either will take. I'd trade Whitley or Martes for Darvish, but probably not for Verlander right now. I can't see Darvish being traded to us though. Even though there is no good reason to not trade a rental in division, teams will still avoid it. The A's are a clear exception because they know how stupid that is. If anything they should want to trade a rental to us because it hurts our future value and helps theirs, but that isn't how teams usually think.
It wasn't about a side. Astros are going to try to dump prospects they like less than the market. Other teams are going to try to dump players that they like less than market. Trades are risky, and I want Astros to be careful when dealing for guys with a lot of club control that the other team is willing to deal. On what I want Astros to do: Acquire Gray if Tucker and Whitley not needed. Add a bullpen arm or two without trading one of Astros Top 5 prospects unless a great reliever without health issues is available. Add a rental bat cheaply if possible Of those, I would put bullpen arm as highly likely to be done. Gray, I give it 30% chance. On bat, probably less than 5% chance.
Does the emergence of Peacock/Martes make the Astros more willing to trade for a rental? Especially Peacock.
Ok, what if I put this out there: Martes/Whitley, Tucker, and 2 other low prospects for Darvish or Fisher, Perez, and 3 other low prospects for Verlander and +20 mil For me, I would do Verlander, but then I would also spend Tucker, whitley, or Martes in a package for either Britton/Wilson/Hand... If we get Darvish, I dont think we have the prospects to also get a reliever. Also why I want Gray + Reliever more than any of them
Darvish would not command that much. You can't comp a guy like Quintana who still has team control. This is a half season rental. He won't clean your farm.
There's absolutely zero chance Luhnow blows his load and pays the farm for Darvish, only to have Darvish go running back to the Rangers or Yankees after the season. We're not parting ways with any of our blue chip prospects unless it's for a pitcher under team control.
How about neither? Why would I want to trade three possible top of the rotation arms (Martes-Whitley-Perez) and/or a possible starting outfielder for 15 games from an injury prone starter? Why would I want to give the Rangers multiple starters for that? I am not giving any of my top 5-6 prospects for Verlander. The Astros are not really improved much with Verlander, and I am not even sure right now that Darvish is THAT much better than Peacock, There is a good chance both Fisher and Martes are starting for the Astros next year from day 1, and Whitley and Perez could be the year after. I am all for dealing for a special player or long term piece, but Darvish in and Verlander in 2017 are not that piece.
