One thing we ought to be looking at is who we wont be able to protect in the Rule 5 Draft. I bring it up here because these are the guys we will lose for nothing if we dont move them before then.

Unless we are talking about a premier closer or TOR SP, these are the guys we should be packaging in trades.

Me too, to a degree. I just dont want to give up guys that would be essential for a TOR or lights out reliever (should one or the other emerge).

I'm sorry what? So because a fan base gets hyped about a bust when he was performing well, that fan base shouldn't be trusted to evaluate how Darvish is performing currently, in comparson with previous seasons?? this is going too far. Don't get me wrong I'm not a Rangers fan in the least, but you are certainly making sweeping generalizations of a large group, based on these "conversations with people in Ft. Worth" lol

That's basically been my point all summer. We have so much depth throughout the minors and at the major league level that part of me just wants to see how it pans out. I also realize this is a prime chance for a WS run and those opportunities don't come around often. I still don't want to mortgage the future for someone like DeGrom though.

On your other post... I'm not super familiar with how the rule 5 draft works. Can you or someone else explain or at least name drop some of our minor league players that might be snatched through that?

EDIT: Due to my impatience and curiosity I did a quick google search. I want to be sure I am interpreting this clearly... http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/minorleagues/rule_5.jsp?mc=faq

According to that wouldn't a player like Teoscar Hernandez technically be eligible for the rule 5 draft?

2ND EDIT: NVRMIND, he's on the 40 man roster. I just learned how to reeds good.

From my research, I believe deetz, laureano, Martin and jd Davis will have to be put on the 40 man or left unprotected.

It basically boils down to college guys selected in 2014 draft and high school guys and international signings from 2013.

IFA signing Cionel Perez too since he was signed after his first offer was voided and signed for less

Trading a glut of young players which are starting or will likely start for your team for the next 5-7 years, and getting back what you are suggesting is stupid.

The Astros would not resign Machado
    No is sufficient.

If you cannot figure out why it is a bad idea, then you have bigger problems.

Rival evaluators aren’t entirely sure that the Orioles will actually trade Zach Britton before the July 31 deadline because it might be that the package of prospects offered will be less than optimal. Other teams have been trying to gauge how healthy Britton is after he missed two months with elbow trouble earlier this season. It is taken as doctrine by some teams that even when a pitcher heals, as Britton apparently did, an elbow breakdown is a precursor of a larger problem to come.

Given the status of the market, I just don't see a deal really worth making.

We're not at the point where we have to make a trade just to make a trade. And I only want someone who can *really* move the needle. Archer, Britton, and maybe Teheran are the only options there. I'm not interested in a Samardjiza-esque pick-up. We don't need to add offense. Maybe an under-the-radar lefty pickup, but other than that, I'm fine with standing pat. The cost to barely move the needle for a #3 is just not worth gutting our farm.

I'd like to get a reliever but I'm otherwise with you. There aren't any starters on the market worth the move and, with a bolstered pen, we don't need to gut the farm. With the September call ups and the division having been long since clinched, they can call up guys to eat innings.

Luhnow said today that with Keuchel and McHugh coming back, focus is on adding bullpen arms, not a starter.

Me too. I'd take a true top starter, but that's not out there. I'd take Gray, if we could get him without giving up one of our stud prospects, but otherwise, add a couple of bullpen arms and I'm good.

Yeah, my thoughts have bounced all around with all the rumored arms available in the past, but they're not available (would have loved that Quintana deal though). They're gonna sink or swim with the health of Keuchel and LMJ as far as the rotation goes. Get a top flight bully arm.

So, we've got a rotation of:
    Keuchel
    McCullers
    McHugh
    Fiers
    Peacock/Morton

    And an 8 person bullpen:
    Giles
    Devo
    Harris (Musgrove/Martes while on DL)
    Gregerson
    Morton/Peacock
    Feliz
    Sipp
    Martes/Musgrove
(Hoyt on team until Keuchel gets back)

Outside of upgrading Sipp with a lights out lefty... I don't see a couple of bullpen arms that would make a difference. If Britton is healthy, and he pushes everyone down -- sure.

I guess we go hard for Brad Hand or Justin Wilson. I wonder if you try and build a package around Michael Feliz.

Someone should ask him when McCullers is coming back.

LMJ worries me a bit. In a perfect world, he's slotted as our #3 instead of our #2 in the playoffs. Especially with this years team. Nothing against Lance; he's a fantastic pitcher. His durability issues compounded with his youth just seem better suited as a #3. A veteran #2 seems ideal, but it's nearly impossible to find what we're looking for on the market.

Hindsight is 20-20, but Sale would've been perfect. I was against the cost at the time too. love Breggy and Martes but sheesh. We would've survived the depth hit. Our farm is loaded. Our long inning relief is deepest in the league. The quality and amount of our ML relievers who can throw 2+ IP is crazy.

I just don't see anyone on the market proving close to what we could use. Gray and Archer are about it. So be it, let's roll!
