My impression is that they would rather swap Anderson with their crap if it meant they could dump them to a third team over doing nothing at all. Melo ruled them out so they're back down to reality.

Worst case for NYK: Melo stays, makes a huge stink that poisons the water in NY for all future free agents, gets hurt and activates his player option which prevents NYK from moving on for the next two years when Porzingis becomes a restricted free agent and demands a SnT or threatens to sign his qualifying offer. I'm not fooled. NY has a lot more to lose here. While I don't expect them to agree to a Anderson for Melo swap, a combination of a decent young player and some cap relief should be enough.

CJ McCollum is a tier 3 star in my mind. If you go by the 538 statistical breakdown he was listed as a "Gamma" level player, meaning tier 3. His statistical profile actually ranks him ahead of Melo right now. Their problem is they have two gammas and no alpha or beta. At best you can project Melo as a Gamma (they don't, but maybe you bank on upside in a new system). They aren't a title team with or without Melo. We have an alpha and a beta in the star system. We are a title contender.
