We would have to have a miserable season like the season before last. The Rockets are finally getting rolling. Morey will be around.. and that is from the expectation that the Rockets are a top 3-4 team and looking like the second best team with the right tweak. Winning a title will not be the litmus test. That's silly to me.
Would love that. Morey, Yao, JVG work with Yao's contacts to get Chinese money behind it with Yao as a Principal and Morey as the GM. Would be ecstatic for something like that. But let's be real, these are fan fantasies. Most likely a bunch of billionaires and multi-millionaires get together and form a group with someone at the helm and buy it.
Morey shouldn't get too comfortable at this point. Short of getting a championship in a year or two he's likely gone. I think no one including Harden should be comfortable with this news. The Rox are 20 plus years removed from a championship and haven't really been that close to winning another one in the current regime under Morey. Wouldn't shock me at all if another ownership group would want to clean house and start over with their own blueprint for the organization.
It's hard to say because I can't think of another team that sold while in such an upward trajectory. It's true that most new owners bring new people, but most new owners are taking over poor franchises.
I don't think DM will be going anywhere else anytime soon. He will be valued as a major asset to potential buyers.
i think chinese ownership would be more reluctant to ruffle the feathers and change too much, at least the first couple years. but buyers have to be approved by the league office first, and they have their own ideas about who to let into the club.
Morey is the barometer of the new ownership. If new ownership lets Morey walk - we are screwed indefinitely and we must mob in the streets. If new ownership keeps Morey, things won't change much, basketball-wise, and we can be optimistic about a great future.
Ironically I feel Daryl will be more like in Doc's position when Ballmer took over and get even more power. He's too popular and knownfigure in the NBA for any new owner to really take out. That said if he gets fired there will be at least 10 teams writing him a blank check immediately and giving all personnel controls so he'll easily land on his feet
Have absolutely zero fear that Morey will be fired. I don't think Tilman acquired his wealth by making erratically poor decisions (not that I know anything about him; just that he's worth a couple billion)
Morey isn't going anywhere. He's one of the best if not the best in the biz. If the new owner hires someone else to run the show and they fail, guess what? The owner loses $$$. This is biz. Morey the wise, makes very smart biz decisions related to contracts and personnel. His approach is being adapted across the league. Morey is staying (at least thru his extension)
First, Les doesn't "own" the team; he is the majority partner. A group of people own the Rockets. They apparently have all agreed to sell. It is likely that a new group will agree to buy. Morey's future depends on them. I don't know if they have to honor the extension that Morey received. Lawyers will work all that out. Usually, the new owner or owners will want to bring in their own people.
