he has a large say but he doesn't control it. he still needs dolan to sign off on it. We'll see how hard melo tries. I think for the most part you are right
A deal is likely in place to be agreed upon if Melo says he still wants to be traded after they meet with him. This should be resolved soon.
One possible interpretation of events: 1) the deal was agreed to and it's not favorable to the Knicks 2) Knicks need to save face, so they pause talks to "reengage Melo". Their real purpose is to put the entire responsibility on him. 3) when Melo says no, the Knicks can say "look, we did everything we could" to the media and fans. Then they make the unfavorable deal.
My speculation. NY did us a favor by announcing this, so tomorrow is strictly for CP3. We can hopefully avoid questions about Melo while celebrating the acquisition of CP3. Plus Morey can’t be doing a bunch of number crunching and negotiating during this time. This gave NY time to announce their new GM, and “try and keep Melo” when nothing really changed in the front office. Just a hunch, but I could obviously be wayyyyy off.
Lol the article should be "Knicks balk on giving up asset to shed Meyers Leonard's salary.. want Rockets to pay for it"
