One of the things that makes him not a great comp for many MLB players is that he came straight out of high school. I'm pretty sure there are a ton of solid big leaguers that would have struggled in pro ball at 18. When Berkman and Blum were talking on the broadcast the other day, neither of them were even viewed as good enough to be drafted out of high school. Had Cameron gone to college and progressively improved over 3 years, and then was drafted, he might have gone without the low minors struggles that look so bad right now. At this point it's clear Cameron wasn't ready for full season professional baseball when he was drafted.
I think we can drop the 0.5 from the end of the tools. Not saying he won't get it, but it isn't there yet according to scouts and stats.
Perez, LaCroix, Bukauskas, Serrano, and Bielak are the only signed draftees who are not shown on a minor league roster.
I was just thinking of Daz comps, and Delino Deshields Jr. is a pretty damn good one. He struggled a lot in A ball, not as much as Daz did, but it wasn't good. He basically spent 2 years at one level before he moved on. He also had a mediocre showing in AA. Had he not been a Rule 5 pick, it might have taken him 6 years to get through the minors. He's been a pretty good little player for the Rangers.
- We all know Joe Perez had Tommy John surgery - Jonathan Lacroix is wearing Greeneville stuff... and a boot on his left foot.
How about comparing Daz to his dad? Mike Cameron Age 18: Rookie, .567 OPS Age 19: Short Season, A- , .717 OPS Age 20: A-, .589 OPS Age 21: A+, .734 OPS Age 22: AA, .784 OPS Age 23: AA, 1.002 OPS
Jake Adams with another homer (5) for Tri-City. Nerio Rodriguez has homered in consecutive games for the DSL Blue team. Hector Perez got the start for Buies Creek: 5 IP, H, ER (on a wild pitch), 4 BB, 5 K
Cameron 2-2 with a double and a walk so far tonight. Coming in to tonight he hit .368 in his last 10 games.
Up to .746 OPS for the season. I wouldn't be surprised if he got promoted before the end of the season.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/top-100-prospects-chat-july-10/#FUrlSmduvFrT6Vrj.97 Brian (Bourbonnais): Any consideration for Yordan Alvarez or Yanio Perez? J.J. Cooper: Yordan Alvarez didn’t miss by much. It’s my expectation that we’ll see him in the Top 100 at some point this year or by next February’s offseason list. Really good hitter for his age with power that is starting to play in games. Great trade for the Astros and one that could pay off for years to come. If Houston asks for a prospect on your team who is in the lowest levels of the minors and you’re another team, just say no.
I don't think it takes much research to find guys with an ops of .750 in A ball as a 20 year old that won't on to be successful major Leaguers. A quick search of 1995 center fielder's found a quick half dozen guys that were opening day starters who hit that poorly as a 20 year old in A ball. Brian McRae is one quick example. Not super fast. Not super powerful. Never more than 33 stolen bases or 10 home runs as a minor leaguer. Minor league season OPS .690 .690 .580. .590 .610 .742 The .742 was as a 22 year old in AA. Then he was a major leaguer the next year. Ended up with a 10 year major league career, with an average .720 ops and 14 total WAR.
I hope not. I think he needs to experience some sustained success. Plus, even though his production has taken a huge step forward the last 2 months, he is still striking out quite a bit. I'd like to see him have a full month where he strikes out less than 20% before promoting him. That may not happen and he may just be a high strikeout hitter who makes up for it with above average tools everywhere else.
With Alvarez and Bukauskas, Houston has 8 Top 100 prospects. Given that 3 Top 100 prospects should be more than enough to acquire any pitcher who is available this deadline, they'll still finish the season with 5 of the Top 100 prospects in the game. Pretty impressive.
True, but I don't think he was comparing their playing styles. That being said, DeShields had a much, much better showing in his 2nd attempt at Low-A.
Don't have access, but saw on another site that Tucker, Whitley, Perez, and Alvarez are on it. That's extremely high for Alvarez.
Thanks. Yeah that's very high for him. Who would've thought that Josh Fields could bring a future top 50/100 prospect in return?
