Bottom line though, he is the worst offensive player on the team He shat on our fan base in 05 and now is a bad player in his return Stockton, Malone, Pujols, Fisher (hoops version), K Brown...Beltran Only difference in those guys to me is Beltran is here now and is really bad
Rasmus caught some baseballs in the outfield before his ear thing went crazy. On feelings towards Beltran, I would say I dread his at bats more than I "hated" him for leaving. Granted, it is not all Beltran's fault as it is frustrating to me to watch what seems like a decade without a great hitter at the bottom end of the defensive spectrum. When is the last time the Astros had a great hitter at LF, 1B, or DH? Berkman?
If recent Yuli is him getting accustomed to MLB and the USA and not just a hot streak, he could be the first great one there since the killer Bs
Yuli? In fairness, we haven't had a DH very long historically, and some of that time was during the rebuild when many positions had inferior talent.
Carlos Lee and Berkman in 09. FWIW we didn't have many good hitters anywhere from 10-14, so you could basically play the how long has it been card for most of the positions prior to the current group getting there.
Oh and as for the poll since I wasn't around back then, Purpura and McClane are at fault. Still pisses me off How in the f**k do you allow one player to hijack the entire offseason of a contending club. You make your best offer, you give a deadline, and you move on. This isn't the NBA, no one player is that important. That Beta male management hamstrung us with a poor offense all season, but we lucked into a career year from Ensberg. God I f**king hated Purpura, and McClane's stripes were showing at that point. I see why Hunsicker finally said f**k this, I'm out.
Other positions are harder defensively, though, so they don't stand out as as much to me. Fowler, Lowrie, Springer (been here a while), Altuve (see Springer), and Castro all had good offensive years for their positions. My frustration is mostly since 2015 though. Astros are in the third straight year of playing winning baseball and still seem to be searching for bats at positions (though LF has become a lot more defensive oriented lately) that are historically easier to fill.
Gattis should be full time DH and when he catches, Beltran can DH. End of discussion. You keep Beltran cause he is such a good bench 'coach.' --says everyone...so keep him for experience but ditch for results. Then Swap Aoki for Fisher and we are the juggernaut!
I'm afraid we are stuck with Beltran for the remainder of the season. It sucks because I think Fisher could do more with the bat, and he would give us another base stealer.
He did it last year with Castro... so what is the disadvantage ? Also not saying you don't give Gattis a day off and plug in Beltran an extra day when needed.
Injury and losing the DH. Beltran does look finished though. Maybe there's one final extended surge in him.
Agree to an extent, ole Timmy definitely set our franchise back years Beltran played us for fools too though, used us for leverage then shucked us like a used rubber
We all got hornswaggled by Drayton. Once he realized his kids wanted nothing to do with the team, it was all about the sale price.
He hasnt been terrible and has contributed with some timely hits. I look forward to his at-bats during the playoffs.
How quickly we become smug.. last couple years .222 was the top quarter of our lineup. now its absolute last and all we can do is try and replace him. the young guys love him. i wouldnt eff that up.
Was huge for us in 04 playoffs His last 71 playoff at bats carry a .253 avg and .767 OPS Was 2-11 last year with two singles He was a great player at one time....don't look like that is the case anymore
