I don't WANT. I say Griffin will. It will do nothing more than what PJ has already been doing. The Knicks can wait aalll the time they want. Can Melo wait?
The HOU-NYK-POR trade still makes all parties happy (esp. if Rox include a 2020 lottery protected first) HOU: Melo (NYK) 3rd star + another Team USA baller NYK: Crabbe (POR - 25 y.o.) + Leonard (POR - 25 y.o.) + Taylor (HOU - 22/23 y.o.) + 2020 lottery protected 1st from HOU players 25 & under + future 1st POR: Anderson (HOU) + Quarterman (HOU) Shed salary + add legit stretch 4 After that, Rox trade Uthoff + rights to Llull to Brooklyn for G Spencer Dinwiddie Dinwiddie is adept at P-n-R + 3pt shooter Then, Rox sign Ersan Ilyasova with BAE Ilyasova gives Rox a legit second unit CP3 -- Dinwiddie -- Brown Harden -- EGo -- T. Williams Ariza -- Tucker -- Qi Melo -- Ilyasova -- Long Capela -- Nene -- Nanu 10 deep with youngsters for when vets need a night off. Defensive lineup: CP3 -- Ariza -- Tucker -- Ilyasova -- Capela / Nene Offensive lineup: CP3 -- Harden -- Ariza -- Melo -- Nene Small ball / uptempo: CP3 -- Harden -- Ariza -- Melo -- Ilyasova
yup. A buyout which has him leave almost 75% of his money is also a very good option a GM would gladly take over the contract of Rhyan Anderson.
If they trade Melo now they open up cap space right now, which they've said they want to do, they want a veteran PG... they are not going to pay him to stay home, that's just a no win scenario for everyone... Melo isn't agreeing to go to OKC...
He might not take a buyout that low given that the Knicks have absolutely no leverage and he has basically all of it. Perhaps paying Melo is a better option than taking what is offered in trade, but those are the 2 choices. Perhaps that's what we're about to see.
It will all depend on Melo's willingness to win. Buyout of leaving 75% > trade with a slight positive asset > Melo stays >>>>> taking back huge bad contracts of negative trade value of multiple firsts. If Mills is in place? Then sure. NY is stupid and they will do it. But Griffin? nope. He has a brain.
No, they can't. Carmelo is under contract for one more season, then a play option after that, which he will waive and leave the Knicks with nothing in return. So the Knicks have exactly until this year's trade deadline to get something for him. Yes, I understand that getting only bad contracts back for Melo does not help them, but that isn't the rumored deal is it? Last I heard the deal also included Harkless and a pick. So taking on a bad contract for a couple of assets. That is worth it when you consider that Melo is essentially a bad contract himself, since he does not fit with the team's future and holds a NTC so you cannot trade him for equal value.
I think he gets bought out and then signs with the Cavs. I don't see any possible avenue where the Rockets end up with Melo while unloading that massive albatross of Ryno contract without having to give up more picks (which we don't have) or several other players such as Gordon/Ariza. We need that third team to step up and essentially hurt themselves for our benefit which won't happen, imo.
Carmelo Anthony is likely going to use his opt out clause after the upcoming season. Which means at most he has two years left but likely one. Ryan Anderson has 3/62 left on his deal. If the Knicks don't like Anderson and don't think they can trade him for something they want, then they are better off buying out Anthony or just keeping him. The owner has never given a damn about chemistry
Also is it just an assumed fact now that Anderson is some TERRIBLE unmovable contract? Because he had one bad playoffs? You really think all GMs are that myopic that they only focus on 12 games? Do we not live in a world where JJ Redick just got $20m for one year? Anderson is a better player than JJ, and if we keep him, CP3 will make him earn that $20m so that he will not cost us an asset in any trade.
You claim he has a brain, so assuming that is true he knows that Melo staying flat out isn't an option and he knows that a buyout wouldn't be cheap because he'd have absolutely no leverage in that negotiation. The Knicks owe him 54 million dollars, to do a buyout, it probably costs them 30. A good GM would find a creative way to get more teams involved in order to get the best possible return in trade, a decent GM just does the buyout. a bad GM just takes what is offered to them, a tragically awful GM tries some nonsense where Melo stays.
Anderson does not make sense on a rebuilding Knicks team, just like Melo doesn't either. But then no one is saying Anderson is going to the Knicks.
Harkless and a pick? What pick a second rounder? If it only included NY taking back Harkless' 9.5 mil and a 1st rounder the trade would have long ago been completed. BUT it can't not without Anderson's salary going out. Ofcouse they can wait. 1 year of Melo's contract is worlds better than 3 years of Anderson. Nothing in return >>> Trash value in return.
as you said a good gm finds creative ways to get more teams involved. Sit down in the bench until you waive your NTC for more teams.
A good GM knows when he is in a no win situation and will cut his losses by getting the best return possible, instead of holding out hope for an "equal" return, and risk getting nothing. It is very possible that the reason why there is no trade yet is because the current Knicks front office is too delusional about what they want in return for Carmelo. If Griffin is indeed this good GM, his hire might accelerate a Carmelo trade, not stop it.
well until that happens he has negative value. JJ got 20 mil for ONE YEAR. He is an expiring. He isnt' in the books for longterm. Is Ryan Anderson not for 3 more years? Is he expiring?
Yes, that is what I'm most afraid of. Morey is so desperate and of course Les too, to get it done, that we will be left with no depth. I'm sure that Capela will be the main piece,Eric Gordon will be offered, instead of Anderson and Ariza too. Future 1st rounders with little or no protection, maybe Zhou. A third team will have to step in, and I bet they will ask the Rockets for picks/ cash too, since the Knicks don't have too much to offer the 3rd team either.
