So we had a thread for the 6 string. How about one for the bassists out there? Here are mine currently in no particular order Les Claypool- Primus Flea- Red Hot Chili Peppers Zach Smith- Pinback Brian Gibson- Lightning Bolt Bootsy Collins- James Brown/ P-Funk
seeing mccartney in the toyota center when he was on the tour after divorcing his wife was one of the best concerts of my entire life. it was like 10 years ago
Here is a couple more: James Lee Jamerson played on all of the big Motown hits. Stanley Clarke. Chris Squire of Yes.
The Paperback Writer/Rain single, while also being one of the best A-side/B-side pairings in history has some simply badass bass lines from Sir Paul. This is one of my all time favorite drum/bass songs:
dude all 3 of those guys are incredible. My personal favorite out of the 3 is chris squire because my true love is progressive rock and math rock (math rock is the combination and evolution of punk rock + progressive rock) My old guitar teacher taught me Awaken on the guitar and it's still one of the greatest feelings to turn on the album, get lost, and play along on my guitar. makes you feel like you are the guitarist in the band. This song always takes me to another place when I play along to it.
mccartney mike watt (minutemen) jah wobble robbie shakespeare (sly & robbie) simon gallup (the cure) kunle justice (fela & seun kuti)
only one that I haven't heard of is jah wobble. I'll have to check him out right now. I saw the Cure at ACL and it was one of the best concerts I've seen. YOU LIKE FELA KUTI! I LOVE AFRO BEAT. I can go on and on. Antibalas, akoya afrobeat ensemble, tony allen! have you heard Fela's stuff with Ginger Baker from cream? so f'n good. Fela inspired stuff! By the way have you heard mike watt's album with my favorite modern/active guitarist nick reinhart from tera melos? interview with mike watt on nick reinhart amazing song I'm telling yall nick reinhart is a modern day legend. Rock just isn't as mainstream anymore unless its nickelback type stuff. All the old school legends love tera melos and reinhart. he's making stuff with adrian belew from king crimson too Math Rock is a growing genre with new guitar heroes being born. I'm listening to that jah wobble video as I type this right now! I love these threads because it allows me to see other music lover's opinions on fantastic musicians.
If you like mike watt please jam that big walnuts yonder video if you are down! I'm jamming that jah wobble right now its kickass!!!
was that the one 4 years ago with depeche mode? i was there for that too, when it rained like crazy during their set. even though they are all old now it was the best of the 3 times ive seen them. depeche mode was surprisingly awesome as well. i love simon gallup...his basslines are often the main melodic hook in those songs. me too! i play in an afrobeat band and we cover fela...i got that fela live record with ginger on vinyl...one of his best for sure. if you have not seen it, check out the documentary about ginger called "beware mr. baker"...lots of stuff about his time living in nigeria. really entertaining documentary...he is a detestable human being though. yes i have. watt is one of my musical heroes. ill always check out whatever he is doing. he came through austin a couple months ago and played a ton of minutemen songs. jah is probably my favorite bassist...simple, repeating and hypnotic basslines. he has a quote i like..."the bass is the mantra of the song"...that whole album with bill laswell is great...radio axiom.
