Well there have been a spike in hate crimes towards minorites according to FBI data. Is that attributed to Trump supporters? I'll leave that conclusion open ended.

If there was coercion than CNN certainly crossed the line, but it is also possible that the person never anticipated Trump retweeting his video and he becoming the center of attention. Maybe just maybe, his apology was sincere and people need the CNN story to create some drama.

What CNN did was unprofessional. That however doesn't mean that the apology was forced. Why is it that it's ok to jump to conclusions when the enemy is the left, but if it's Trump, he gets the benefit of the doubt to the bitter end?

They actually discussed this morning whether they had a duty to protect his safety by not releasing his name because people out there would want to hurt him. The guy posted a funny gif. The story here should have nothing to do with the guy who posted the gif. They are being pretty ridiculous here.

The guy never would have apologized if they hadn't tracked him down.

You don't know that. CNN had just sent him an email requesting an interview. They didn't coerce him and they hadn't spoken. He wrote the apology on his own and then contacted CNN asking that his identity not be revealed. CNN agreed. I think it was bad form for CNN to write that they could post his name if anything changes, but other than that, it's totally fair for a new organization to identify someone and reach out to them - that's part of journalism.

This idea that his apology was forced is a joke. Why would CNN want a "Forced" apology anyway? For what purpose? They would get more from revealing his identity that being painted as blackmailers. It's just ridiculous.

CNN was unprofessional in posting that this could all change. But they were not unprofessional in tracking him down and reaching out to him.

Most of us would quickly apologize if something so trivial threatens to affect your family. CNN bullying this lone citizen is absurd.

I am sure Trump supporters will not believe this anyway, but posting CNN's response...

CNN responds to criticism that it 'blackmailed' the Reddit user who created Trump's body-slamming meme

OK, but they essentially threatened ("reserve the right") to disclose his identity if he ever posts something offensive in the future. That is coercion.

It is totally inappropriate. They clearly were trying to score a gotcha on Trump by reporting the guy who created the gif was a dirtbag in his personal life. It's embarrassing that CNN which claims to have all this journalistic integrity would do something like that.

Again, that was AFTER the apology.

    Order of events

    1. CNN identifies individual
    2. CNN reaches out on Monday via email
    3. Individual releases apology
    4. Individual responds to CNN and converses with them asking them not to reveal identify
    5. CNN agrees
    6. CNN publishes article describing these events and stating it has the right to reveal identity if anything "changes"

CNN did not coerced an apology - I don't see how you can make that argument. It was inappropriate for them to add that last night for sure - and that editor should get in trouble for it. But the argument that this guy had been forced to apologize simply isn't substantiated.

I think the argument here is that CNN is coercing the man's future behavior. That if decides to make another silly CNN video next month, CNN might retaliate by publishing his name and bringing upon him the wrath of snowflake liberals.

No, multiple posters are saying they "tracked him down and got a written apology from him" - which is what I am disagreeing with.

Both sides are stupid. CNN should be ashamed of themselves. That's America 2017. Embarrassing. Time for the adults to take over.

That is funny. There is alot of correlation between BJ Armstrong/D-Mo and CNN/Democratic agenda. They are by all accounts supposed to be working for their client, but surely do know how to screw things up for them at the same time. The association (correct or incorrect) between CNN and democratic party royally screws them. FoxNews is Dan Fegan who knows how to exploit teams into giving Chandler Parsons max contracts.

"shhh it'll be over soon" we here in houston know what can happen when you mess around in the social media.
who can forget that line quoted from banshee used by a rockets employee. he should've been let go because he never mentioned he got it from banshee. But I know a nerd when i see one and I had just finished that season a couple of days prior. The content I found amusing especially since it was dallas.

anyways, this is what the media and the presidency have turn to. As the former governor of florida , a republican, has said... "It's chaos."

A president should not be tweeting especially tomfoolery and expect to be protected by the presidency from those he offends. he should never have taken the job if he wanted to remain tweeting about bella cheating on Ed cullen.

Let's say, paulie shore gets elected president, after what happened in november it could happen, should his critics of his atrocious movies just stop their hatred and kiss his arse immediately?

Trump should leave that gangsta twitter life behind and let his daughter run his PR. she seems like she is the most composed, thoughtful and smartest in the family.

As for the guy who created the wrestling gif, he was just displaying his sense of humor. I don't care what political side he is in, he'd get a "like" from me.

Cnn, You've sunk to Trump's level. No need to be so thinned skin.

Okay. Me chiming in on your conversation with @durvasa about your conversation with @justtxyank: even if the apology was not coerced, it sounds like coercion of future good behavior. If that was not their intention, they did a terrible job writing it (even more terrible, considering that writing is their profession). I think what they wrote is much worse than the CNN-wrestling bit Trump tweeted, and I'm predisposed to hating everything Trump does. Trump is catching all this flak (especially from CNN) from the veiled implication of violence against journalists, and then they level a threat against a private citizen that isn't even really veiled. Honestly, the CNN wrestling vid takes on a very different aspect when it is sent out by Trump than it is when it is posted by a random Reddit user. Tracking down the creator is completely irrelevant to the Trump tweet unless your angle is that Trump stole his material without permission. I don't know wtf CNN is doing here. This whole thing has gone from stupid to stupider.

Why do you always talk out of your ass? All the violence and stupidity has come from people on your side so far. Also if you're okay with a news organization going after a 15 year old for what he posted on reddit than I am okay with them going after this idiot for posting a racist statement on the internet. The idiot
