The NG contracts we have now......will they still retain value as expiring deals after they become fully guaranteed on July 1?
They don't become guaranteed on that date but no, they lose significant value once they become guaranteed
I think Millsap will be the next domino. Not necessarily for us, but feels like he is moving next. I hope it's us and MUCH prefer to get Millsap over Melo, as long as we're not paying Millsap more than 80/3 on declining scale.
Ah, I was under the impression that because of the new CBA, all NG contracts would become guaranteed on July 1. So if they lose significant value, does that imply that Morey is trying to swing a deal before midnight tomorrow?
Same here. I'm not a fan of Melo, but i actually expect him to play well here with Harden and CP, it's just that i really think that yeah, you need talent to beat the Warriors, but you also need intensity and some fighters, some toughness, and maybe a good small ball 5...not just a bunch of figurines. Millsap would give us all of that, Melo won't. Also, the fact that he may get bought out in the future makes even more cautious about making a trade for him.
OK so let me ask this. Does anyone know what the cap figure of all the NG players equal for next calender year? I remember hearing something like Kelly's jumps to over a million for instance. And curious about the others. My question is what's salary cap number and then conversely, what's that number times 175% in which we could take back in trade? I'm curious if we are getting close enough to a trade for melo before the season starts using nothing but NG contracts. We do it for melo obviously and nyk does it for capspace, flexibility and to move on from melo. @BimaThug @basketballholic
You know, at least for this moment in time, Jarrod Uthoff is the best power forward on this team. I so wished we'd keep him. He's such an MDA type player. Except with defense and rebounding. I'm telling you he's a positive addition guys an NBA rotation right now. Uthoff is everything the Lakers hoped they could make Randle in to.
The big thing here is Morey turned his $3.5m Cash Considerations into as many NG contracts to aggregate into one trade as possible...that gives him 175% of trade-matching power* It has maximum value when still NG, simply so the other team can immediately cut the player for capspace. If the contract is for just one more year (2017-18), then as @Fyreball says, it's still an expiring contract, so it converts to capspace at end of year ... just not *this* free agency year. * (or $x outgoing salary plus $5m if outgoing is $9.8m - $19.6 m, and 125% if outgoing is >$19.6m... think aggregating with Ryno)
Yeah I don't even buy the notion that Melo is more talented. He is more offensively talented. But overall, not really. To me rebounding, defense and passing are talent too and Melo is not so much better a scorer than Millsap that those 3 things don't count. I'm sure Melo would be Ryan Anderson 2.0 here, but Millsap imo is more than that. With Millsap/Pau/Ariza/Capela you have a legit shot at being a top 10 defensive team while still being an elite offensive team.
Here's all their salaries. http://www.spotrac.com/nba/houston-rockets/cap/ And here is the calculation of trade value. Note that changes at certain sum total aggregated salary levels. That said, if you are talking about Melo, the 175% won't be used. We will be in the $9.8-19.6m range or the range above. So different formulas are used. $9.8-19.6m means our outgoing aggregated salary must be within $5m of Melo's incoming. If over $19.6m, then Melo has to be within 125% of our outgoing aggregated salary.
