If CP3 wants to win, why did he make us gut our team?

If Chris Paul really wants to win, why didn't he play for free? ;)

Compete with the Spurs in FA ... acquire for some role players.
Sign him for $35M in FA ... Pay him $24M(or whatever it is) next year.

Not all of them but they were going to have to clear room to do work in free agency.

he could've demanded we sign him outright and it would've cost us gutting our team to get under the cap by up to $34M. opting in and facilitating a trade did us a favor and cost him nearly 10M this year. he also waved his trade bonus of over $3M down to half a mil, so i think we really shouldn't question his commitment to winning. he gave up over $10M and allowed us to maintain lots of options by staying over the cap (MLE, LLE, being here before FA period starts so he can help recruit) idk what more you want.

To sign him in the off-season, they would have had to trade Ryan Anderson, Lou Williams, and possibly Pat Beverley without getting any salary in return.

There aren't many teams that are willing to take on Ryan Anderson's contract for absolutely free. And even finding team's to take on Lou Williams for free would have been tough. The teams that need him are the ones that have bo cap space left.

Im not saying it would have been impossible, they most likely would have done it one way or another, but why take that chance when you don't have to?

    Plus, now they;

    1) Still have Ryan Anderson,
    2) Save the mid-level exception (~$8.4 million) as well as ~$8-10 million from CP3's contract (he gets paid $24 million next year by opting in... It would have cost over $32 million to sign him).

I don't think you guys understand, this was a HUGE win for the Rockets. Morey, Harden, and CP3 knocked it out of the park.

A lot of ppl having been asking this so I won't crucify you. First off Morey actually explained himself in the pres conference. Second we couldn't have signed CP3 without trading players away. Third now we have him on the team before FA and we can use that to get another Allstar. Fourth we get an huge trade exception. Fifth to me we changed the narrative about Houston and we have all the momentum going into Free agency! It's all wins for us.

Well, to be fair you did ask a question that had been addressed many times over already.
Then your thread title was kind of snarky (and contained an error) so I'd say a few jabs were to be expected.

    Welcome to the internet.

Yeah this happened before free agency stated, so Morey has more opportunities to sway other big names to come to Houston.

This article lays out the scenario pretty well. And I would say this has been in the works for some time and Morey probably wanted it to happen this way to give him more options. It's a valid question right now, but if he is able to pull off another deal or two, it will probably be obvious why they went this route instead of just a FA signing.

fwiw I reject the premise of the thread title, Chris Paul did not "make us gut our team." (A) we did not in fact gut our team, and (B) Chris Paul didn't make anyone do anything.
so I'm gonna stick to my initial first impression that this is kind of a dopey thread. That's no insult to OP, that's simply an observation that the thread is borderline full r****d.

Plus I would hardly say that we gutted our team. The only two players that even played in the playoffs last year that we traded away are Beverley and Williams.

    Beverley is now CP3.

Williams and Gordon were always redundant.
