Dodgers winning 4-0, 9th inning. They have decent argument for best team. Stros have the best, for now.
Just a very poor call by Hinch no real way to defend it. Hoyt has absolutely no buisiness in high leverage situations right now. Should have gone to Greg or Harris if Devo was unavailable. That was clearly a game hinging AB and Hoyt has failed in virtually every appearance for a month now.
Before I go through and read all of the posts on this game... I blame it on Gattis. That 3-0 swing at a ball below the knees was horrific. Even if that is a strike you take it to avoid the ground ball. But we went from bases loaded with no outs to a man on 3rd with 2 outs and one run scored. If he took that pitch it would have been scored run, bases loaded, no outs... terrible.
Also, it's hard not to blame the offense. At minimum a runner in scoring position in all of the first 6 innings and only ONE RUN?! That is unacceptable. That being said, it got kind of exciting at the end.
That was bad...but putting in Hoyt where he did was inexcusable. That is where our pen depth should come into play. Devo, Feliz, Luke, Harris all available, and you use a guy who has given up runs in 9 of his last 11 games? There is no way to explain that one
Seems like there is lots of places to put blame in this one. -Tuve CS -Fiers loading the bases -Hinch inserting Hoyt -Hoyt -Offense in general through the 1st 8 innings Team loss. Live to fight another day.
To be honest, talking to my friends I had blamed Hoyt and Gattis. But I wasn't sure (like I said that was before reading through all the posts) how you guys were either gonna blame Hoyt or Fiers for loading the bases so I just stuck with Gattis. It's not even like you gave him bases loaded and no outs, there were TWO outs, anything but a meatball pitch!
Another poster mentioned during the game... fatigue is the biggest factor for pitching Hoyt. Besides Feliz, the main guys had pitched Saturday and Sunday. Playing last night would've been 3 games in 4 days for most of them. Feliz pitched 2 innings Sunday. If Fiers finishes the 6th, the 7th and 8th could've still been shaky seeing how Guduan was the next option. Giles has had plenty rest, but we couldn't get the game to him. The lack of IP by the rotation is really overworking the pen and it's been happening most of the season. We scored one run thru 8 innings.
I think this is accurate. I have no issues with the criticism of the Hoyt decision because it was made in advance instead of being results-driven. But I continue to believe the Astros are looking at October as opposed to June. I simply don't think they care as much about winning on a day-to-day basis as fans do. The key members of the bullpen were used a lot the last few days, and here was a chance to give them a couple of consecutive days off. It's also a chance to put struggling members of the bullpen in high pressure situations and see how they respond. If they fail, it helps make decisions on future needs. If they succeed, it maybe gets some people back on track. If they lose the game, not really a big deal. The only effect it may have is on 1 home vs road game in the World Series, but I suspect the Astros are not remotely concerned about that as compared to all the other factors.
I understand this line of thinking and it makes sense from the broader view of things. But I am a bit surprised Jeff hasn't found a reliever to help out (via trade). I have come to understand why a TOR guy hasn't arrived, especially in light of whats been available over the last month.
Ok but you can't go on cruise control for the last 60% of the season. It's incredibly hard for a team to snap into winning intense playoff games against battle tested teams after that. Play to win. Or lose.
There is an argument. But, Lets have them shelf Kershaw for a month Alex Wood miss a couple starts, Rich Hill on the DL for I don;t know how long Morton is out and whoever their McHugh equal is out for the entire year thus far. Would they be nibbling at our heals then? These injuries are starting to hurt big time. Of course. Maybe we want LA to have home field if we make it to the series. We sure as hell can't see the ball in MM
