Sure, but with "defenses getting smarter," it also puts a premium on players who can be part of smart defenses. Anderson is a nice offensive piece, but his lack of defense severely undercuts his value. It's not like he's on a bargain contract.

The truth is, the era of the Dirks, garnetts and Tim Duncans is gone. The power for position is nothing more than a niche position nowadays. teams do not look for scoring rather shooting, rebounding, etc.

you don't need to be a great defender at the power forward position. Ryan Anderson's defense was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. He's actually an average defender and considering you don't need anything more than average at that position that makes him a positive defender

the post game is dead. when did Ryan Andersons defense really hurt us? He did just fine on laMarcus aldridge.

You know......this might make sense for Utah.

By the way, I'm pretty sure Hayward is going to Boston. So I don't think there'll be a sign-and-trade here. Or perhaps even a sign-and-trade at all. But if Hayward leaves I could see a deal possibly for Derrick Favors using Anderson and Dekker.

You're right, he did fine on Aldridge, and he is an average defender, but I think the devil is in the details. He's actually a good post defender and can guard guys like LMA pretty well. On the other hand, he just doesn't have the lateral quickness to handle pick and rolls and gets burned every time. That's where he hurts us. In today's NBA, I'd rather have an oversized wing play PF who can recover on pick and rolls but has a hard time against a post game, given there are so few of those guys left anyway...

Yeah, Anderson problem is not his one on one defense which is actually decent, it's more that he's just not able to rotate properly and can't stay in front of his man most of times...as today especially when teams go small, being able to switch is a big part of having a good defense. Also Ryan just cannot play the 5...yeah, he would give you top tier spacing on offense, but on defense...that's why we were after Horford first, and why a guy like Millsap would still upgrade us.

Nailed it. Anderson is a good post defender and can handle slower guys. He can guard slow guys like Melo with ease.

There's more to it too. Not only does he struggle tremendously against quick scorers and switches, but the very same quick scorers are able to bother his shot EVEN IF they are generally not good defenders. They just have to be able to close out without fouling. Granted, that's compounded by having only one star on the team (a star who just stands there when Anderson is shooting), but it's our situation and it's a problem.

But we also shouldn't ignore that Anderson is not just a shooter, he is easily the best shooting big man in the NBA. I really wish he were making about $14m so we could genuinely consider being a SUUUUPER SUB backing up the 4 and 5. I would miss his shooting if we replaced him with Millsap, but in reality I know we cannot even discuss competing with the Warriors if we have 2 pick n roll outright defensive liabilities on the floor together for long stretches of the game, so it's either Anderson or Harden.

It's not about defending post-up power forwards, it's about defending in space on the pick-and-roll. IMO, Anderson is really poor when involved in the pick-and-roll which is a big problem to have, since the can be targeted again and again, the way Love often is.

Mike D'Antoni says: NOT ON MY WATCH. Been there, done that with Melo in NY. Remember Linsanity?
I remember who killed Linsanity AND my system and got me run out of town.

    One less team...

Nets just took Mozgov's garbage contract (albeit with D'Angelo Russell)

    Anderson (~ $20m x 3 years) + Dekker
    vs
    Mozgov (~ $16m x 3 years) + Russell

    Which is the better package?

I lost a lot of faith in our ability to get rid of Ryno after that horrific trade by the Lakers. It cost them a 21 year old #2 overall pick who has star potential on a rookie deal to shed salary. Nobody is going to trade for Ryan now.
