Policies grounded in racism and Nazism? It's really best to not be associated to David Duke in any manner, even if some of his policies happen to align.

Duke did have his moment, but I hardly believe there was any need to be politically aligned to him for support. He barely won the special house election in 89 and made some noise in the senate and governor race in 90 and 91. I think it's very much because of a strong push against Duke from the Right (the old and respectable Republican party) in the 90s that doomed him politically. I believe you have to really be aligned to Duke's view to be associated with him at that time, against the mainstream Republican Party who was openly against Duke.

Just because Duke had racist motivations, doesn't mean Scalise did or does. I am not familiar with Louisiana politics. I just read a few articles that gave context to the quote and each of them suggested that Duke had a lot more play in politics than you assert. It was once they were in power and had developed a constituency that backed them that they moved away from associating with Duke, but prior to that, according to what I have read, they very much needed his clout just to get into office. Doesn't make it right, but it also doesn't make Scalise himself a Nazi or White Nationalist.

I lived through the period and seen it first hand as a Louisianian resident. Believe me, you do not associate yourself with Duke, unless you are aligned to his views. And no, Duke doesn't have a lot of play in politics. He really dive south quickly and wasn't at all popular after the winning the house seat.

Some of the policies and messages were however pretty popular, especially among White. I don't really follow Scalise, but I would assume, for political reason, even if he has nazi or white nationalist view, he would completely distance himself from Duke.

Whatever the case, Scalise does not support gay marriage and gay in general (was against enforcing anti-hate crimes again gays), which directly impact the very person that saved his life. Maybe that give him pause on his views toward gay people.

IIRC correctly, David Duke won >50% of the white vote when he ran for governor.

I don't know how many of the national guardsmen, federal marshals or 101st airmen who protected James Meredith, the Little Rock Nine or black kids trying to go to school in Boston were pro-integration.

Scalise is such a bigoted ******* that he has this lady on his security detail and trusts her to protect his life and his families.

With that logic I guess slave owners were too. Man! Trusting the servants to cook the family's meals/clean their house. What benevolent folk.

At least let him get out of critical condition before blaming the victim. Sad.

I found an easy solution to deflect criticism of a legislator's desire to restrict human rights. Get shot.

Another reason why assassionation attempts are not only immoral but hopelessly stupid to the point where my first instinct of any assassionation ate it is 'false flag' on either side because it's just so God damn obvious that assassionation attempts just result in garnering more sympathy for the victim of the attempt.
