If the Twins fall out of the race, everyone is assuming Santana would be available. Would they consider trading Berrios? Probably not, but that's the guy I would give a huge haul for.
Quintana's FIP is 4.17 - not good, and the third consecutive year it's increased - but he might be better than his ERA would suggest. He's striking out more batters than at any other time in his career (1+/inning & 9/9); his issue seems to be walks - he's on pace to issue ~80, which would be a career high by a fairly significant amount. I can't attest to what might be causing his loss of control... but I wonder if all the trade rumors are impacting his focus? I'd also wonder if a better defense/team might clean up some of his sloppiness? His swing-and-miss numbers suggest he might still be the same guy (if maybe not slightly better) that we all wanted this winter - again, assuming he can regain some of his control. I would want him ahead of Gray or Cole.
Berrios is 23 year old who was awful in his first 14 starts last year. He's also pitching above his peripherals this year with a 3.94 FIP and 4.57 xFIP. He has enormous potential, and I recognize that matters for winning over the next 3-5 years. But for a team also looking to win *this year*, I'd rather they acquire someone who will be reliably strong now and going into the playoffs if they're going to blow their wad on a single player.
I would be disappointed if Luhnow/Crane didn't get another Ace. Postseason success isn't guaranteed and a Cole or Quintana at least makes me feel better about our teams situation.
Very true. I'm torn on him and Cole. Maybe the trade rumors have impacted him or maybe it goes back to mechanics. Maybe he is hiding an injury like Keuchel. His stock has definitely dropped so maybe take a little off the top and still make a deal happen.
That's not going to happen. Bregman is VERY valuable. Maybe just Bregman and one of Martes or Fisher... that's pushing it tho.
That's a fair desire to want someone who will make an immediate impact -- but I will point out he has pitched better than Gray, Quintana, and Cole thus far this year. Another downside of him -- for this year -- would be a possible innings limit. We saw that with Lance two years ago.
You accidentally hit SEND after typing Chris Archer. Who else did you mean to include? Surely that's not all we'd get? A deal like that would lead to the Rays eventually having to give the Astros draft picks because MLB would rule the Rays acted with criminal intent to steal resources.
Archer should cost a lot. The Rays always try to squeeze out a lot in trades and Archers peripherals look better than results so far. I'd be shocked if a trade happens where we give up anything less than 2 of bregman/martes/tucker. I'd say that's probably the starting point and I'm not sure the Astros would go that far.
Well, Archer isnt declining and being interviewed for steroid allegations. "I just play baseball bro"
