He threw a few stupid (and I mean stupid good) pitches that a guy with his experience had no business throwing.

If he can be consistent, he's a badass.

He was tremendous tonight... his intensity and FU attitude alone can supplement his talent more at this level (vs. any other level).

The strikeout where he nailed Hoying in the thigh was probably my favorite.

We've got enough guys hurt where he'll get a few more turns to do his thing. Interesting to see if he keeps it up!

First time seeing Martes live and holy crap his stuff is absolutely electric. Cannot believe he's only 21.

If Martes makes a couple more starts similar to last night, I would honestly start thinking Luhnow and Co. will try to keep him out of any trade package for a TOR starter. I think they would focus more on guys like Franklin Perez, K. Tucker and Paulino as the potential headliners of a deal. This of course all depends on Martes having a few more starts like last night and proves that he is already a valuable member of our rotation.

Can't overreact to 1 start. He really struggled in the appearance before that. Paulino could just as easily come out with a stretch of 2-3 stellar starts. Every prospect any other team asks for in trade is going to be performing well; that's why they're coveted. No matter who Houston trades to acquire a pitcher, it's going to be painful and undoubtedly a lot of us will consider it an overpay.

I doubt a lot of people here will consider it an overpay if it is prospects for a ToR starter. Luhnow is generally very careful and will weigh future with short term risks. I don't like the word painful as I suspect Astros will give up a substantial chunk of expected value long term for a substantial chunk of expected value short term.

That's why I said if he has 2-3 more starts like this one. Obviously I wouldn't expect Luhnow and Co. to approach the deadline differently because of his one start. But they might approach it a little differently if he makes 2 or 3 more starts like last night. Then, you could either shop Martes as a top prospect who has begun to prove his ability in the majors with the hopes of getting someone like Archer in return, or you could hold on to him and hope that he can continue to be a valuable part of your rotation for the rest of the season until everyone is healthy.

There are only two things he could've done that would've have his first start perfect in my eyes:

    1. Gone out for one more inning (not his fault)
    2. Put one in Odor's ear (his fault)

Martes at 21 already looks like Sabathia / Colon weight.

Not worried about weight. Fat guys can pitch.

I actually thought he looked decent weight wise. Better than I expected. Better than Colon or Fielder or Sabathia. And he looked like a #1 to me in his first start. I'm sold. He's a competitor too.

Yup, agreed, his fire confirmed it for me. He gets easy mid 90s cheese and his breaking ball is nasty...great. He also has competitive spirit like Dallas and Lance do. I hope he's a long-term rotation stalwart for the Stros. Keuchel, McCullers, Martes could be nasty for years to come.

I'm with you...don't think he looked that bad. Especially not as bad as Sabathia or Colon
