I'd be ok with Archer for Bregman. It actually sounds like a pretty fair trade as TB doesn't really have a great option at 2B right now.
I too would be ok with trading Bregman for the right player, but I don't think Gerrit Cole qualifies. Bregman, F Perez, and Martes for Archer and Brad Miller?
Too early to give up on Alex. He's going to be great. Whatever you can get for Martes, Paulino, D fisher and Jd davis, do it. Throw in singleton because I'm a good guy. he doesn't have to be a 1. A two or a nice three would suffice this horror show that the gods bestowed upon us.
It would suck to lose Bregman, but we have options in the infield. I fear Keuchel's issues may prove longer term and the same may be true with Morton. Now with McCullers out, I think you have to expect a big hit if you want to make the most of this season. I don't think another Fiers-level arm will make a difference.
This isn't about giving up on anybody; it's about properly leveraging our talent. Bregman has the potential to open doors that might otherwise be closed. What the Astros might need to start asking themselves is who will have a bigger impact on 2017: Bregman or potential TOR starter? While I don't think the Astros are in panic mode, I would argue they're beyond taking whatever they can fetch. They need to be far more explicit in what they want and which pitcher could deliver that. With DK and LMJ now both on the DL - essentially our code:red preseason scenario - I don't think they can assume anything and should be looking to maximize whatever they possibly can from an acquisition standpoint.
As long as Tampa is in the WC hunt, I don't think they can really move Archer. He's more important than ever to them if they are planning to play in a winner-take-all WildCard game.
Obviously I understand that Bumgarner would cost more than Archer.....I'm simply saying that if we're dealing Bregman, those are the 2 guys I want.
If I'm dealing those guys I'm not doing it for a starter who is struggling big time and a closer who just lost his job
That sounds more like a Yu Darvish package and no way in hell am I trading him to the Rangers. Archer, Quintana, or Santana seems fair for that package. Not Cole, even though I still like the guy.
People seem to forget how much Kazmir cost and it wasn't that much.... Catcher Jacob Nottingham and right-handed pitcher Daniel Mengden fetched a Kazmir. I'm thinking something a little more or maybe even about the same range could net Gray. Then go out and add Cole or Quintana if you wanted.
Gray is worth far more than Kazmir. Not only is he a better pitcher, he comes with 2 additional years of control. I think Gray could be had without giving up Tucker, but it will almost certainly require Martes plus at least 1 other really good prospect.
One move I'm feeling we should make is for a competent reliever. Not a back end guy, just somebody who can come out of the pen and not completely suck. That should be a pretty cheap add, maybe some of the superfluous Fresno guys. This rotating squad of triple A guys who shouldn't be in the majors isn't working. I understand we are just trying to absorb innings, but Diaz, Jankowski and Guduan simply don't have MLB quality stuff, or in Guduan's case command.
Some free agent stopgap options, though none are likely ready immediately, nor have they been useful in a while: Ryan Vogelsong Tim Lincecum Matt Harrison Colby Lewis Henderson Alvarez Jeremy Guthrie Kyle Lohse Brandon Beachy John Danks I'd kick the tires on Danks, Colby Lewis, and Vogelsong in that order before trading for a bottom-of-rotation pitcher (while simultaneously trying to trade for an upper-level arm)
