Our offense is going to have to find their swagger again and put crooked numbers up while we get through the rest of this homestand. With that hopefully one of these call-ups will find it in them not to **** the bed.

I'm sure it's demoralizing to put up 7 and lose (KC) and put up 6 and lose (Angels), but that's the kind of output we'll need against the rest of the Rangers staff and Boston minus Sale.

Did any HOU pitcher pitch well today?..... No

    Diaz came the closest though.

He missed a catchable ball. Perhaps his pain occurred pre-wall.

Of all the games I could have seen this season, I had to see this one. What a mistake.

It was a great wall crashing though. Reddick took the new wall head on.

All things considered Musgrove pitched better than I expected.

The real question tonight is did anyone in the lineup hit well tonight? That's a more resounding no.

    Yeah.. this was discussed earlier.

Apparently, the new batter's eye only bats for non-Stros.

Yeah, I don't get it at all. At this rate we may not want homefield advantage in the playoffs (if we make it).

Indeed he did. We really need to weather being without Keuchel/McCullers. Last thing I want to do is look back July 1 and see the Rangers, Mariners or Angels 6 or 7 games out. Morton is probably out till AUG. McHugh? Who knows.

So tempting to just pull the trigger on a deal now. I'd prolly do it two weeks after the draft is over. I'd prolly trade for two aces.

People seem to forget how much Kazmir cost and it wasn't that much....

Catcher Jacob Nottingham and right-handed pitcher Daniel Mengden fetched a Kazmir.

I'm thinking something a little more
LAT Strains are nothing to mess with, Mid July is early.

I don't think starting pitching was the problem. Musgrove was good for being his first game back. Could have gone another inning. Devo came in and did his normal workload. He's used to it, nothing that suggests over worked from his previous season.

Sipp went almost 2 innings, he's someone who hasn't even seeing the mound for lefty/ lefty situations anymore and diaz, who is on wake up finished the whole game.

It's all for not, if the offense can't put good at bats. Batter's Eye. Paint that freaking star.

You do realize that batters eyes need to be a single color, no?

no. I was thinking a giant rocket ferris wheel with flamingos in the front seat. Just for altuve. Don't defend that ugly centerfield. nowhere close to a dime. 2 out of 10.
making light of the home woes.

To be fair, I agree with you on the Dolphins/weird art out there instead, then Marisnick can just pummel it with a ball every home game.

2-3 weeks before you can look at that bullpen & not worry about number of innings thrown?

Off day on Thursday is in sight, which is a good day to try to reset if we can have a couple of starts that maybe get into the 5th & 6th. It can happen quickly & suddenly there's too much rest. It's gonna take a couple of back to back starts that give the bullpen a rest. Getting into July, which is a ways away, which is the all-star break. Right now, it's what called upon these guys - to pitch & soak up some innings. I'm trying to keep them available. For example, when Devenski goes in, it's really easy to leave him in 3 innings & that would set him back a couple days. It's a chess match trying to piece the innings together but it is what it is.

Are you missing that 3-inning eater in your bullpen?

A little bit. We don't have that long man that can go 45-50 pitches. Diaz has done his best. He's not really that guy. He spot-started for Keuchel & last night went a couple innings. It's set up right now to...we've been filtering in a couple of guys here & there and may have to do that over the next week or so and see a different guy sent out whenever we need an arm. It can correct itself. It's a couple of back to back starts, an off day helps. The perfect case scenario is Peacock pitching a bit deeper tonight, Martes in his first start tomorrow giving us a quality start, followed by an off day so we can go into the weekend fresh.

    Josh Reddick?

He's doing okay. Didn't talk to him this morning. Felt better leaving the ballpark than when I took him out of the game. Diagnosis of a concussion, the severity ranges from mild to severe. You go into the protocol. We'll make sure he passes his tests. I won't put him on the field until he passes. He doesn't necessarily have to go on the 7-day DL but once the diagnosis is made, there is a certain protocol we have to adhere to. We're hopeful, given it's mild & trending in the right direction, that maybe it's only a day or two, off day Thursday, we can possibly not see him until Friday but we won't know until we see him.

How far are you thinking ahead with your arms? Everything is so fluid right now. How far do you have to think ahead with the understanding that it's unlikely pitchers will be getting into the 7th for you as starters?

That can change over the match-ups. Sometimes it's just different. There will be a time in the next month or so that we're talking about having too many pitchers & not getting guys in the game as much. When Lance comes back, when Dallas come back, Charlie will supposedly throw off the mound lightly this week & trend his way back, it will flip when our rotation gets back intact. I gotta look forward to a couple different things. The weekend is a challenge with Boston & then we hit the road for a long trip. I want to keep guys healthy & fresh but keep them available at the right time. One danger using guys outside of their role is all the sudden, you look up & the one inning I wanted to push Harris or Devenski into, it does impact me over the next couple days. Health is a priority & having the right guys available at the right time is a priority. Right now, everyone is trying to pick each other up to reset things.

Mike Fiers, quite a turnaround here lately. Key to his success?

He's been huge at time when we've needed it the most. Those 3 starts after the conversation about coming out of the rotation and to be honest, he pitched his way out of the rotation. Next day, Morton goes down & we needed him back. He took it personal that he was coming out. His curve has been always been a big pitch, a pitch that when he's good, he has it & when he's not, he struggles with the command of it. He throws a high fastball, big delivery with all sorts of moving parts and when he can throw the high fastball & off the same plane, land his breaking ball for a strike, he's a different animal. Changeup usage has gone up, which has been good. His ability to throw secondary pitches for strikes is a game changer for him. He gets a high fastball chase, where you get pop-ups.

Martes & Paulino, when at their best, what can we expect?

They're both different. Martes has electrifying stuff. Quick arm, lotta moxie on the mound, he'll be a guy that can out-stuff anyone. 95-97, pretty good changeup, decent breaking ball, there's energy. There's a lot of things going for him. He tries to change tempo. Favorite pitcher is Johnny Cueto. There's a bravado & style to Martes that is appealing because the energy he has & stuff is good. Can he find the strike zone & find a delivery that keeps him competitive in the strike zone so we don't have 100 pitches in 4.1 innings. Paulino is the opposite: tall, lanky & smooth. There's a ton of strikes in his delivery. He can spin the breaking ball better than most guys. Hitters don't like to see it. He's 6'9. There's an element for him that the angle hitters aren't used to but he has to execute pitches. He can't stay in the middle of the plate & expect to be successful. They're different & both appealing. They're both being asked to do things earlier in their development than expected. They're not overwhelmed as much as they are excitable & hard on themselves.

I worked the postgame call in Friday. A couple of people were mad at you...

For showing up? Were they mad at me for just showing up & being at the field?

There is one person that wants you gone. They were mad you sat George Springer. When you give Springer a day off & Correa off, you still want to win those games, correct?

Give me a break. You don't think I want to win games? We're in first place. We have the best record in baseball. We're trying to win every single day. I get it. The manager becomes the target for everyone for whatever they're mad about. They're humans. They need rest days. I am the manager. I will sit guys. I'm trying to win games. We need to loosen up the angst when guys aren't playing. If I play them & they get out, it's one thing. If I play them & they get hurt, I've overplayed them. That's being fanatical. That's great. Love the support. There will be days off, whether people like it or not.

Do you look at match-ups when considering days off?

OF COURSE! OF COURSE! This isn't a try-hard league. This is putting guys in position to be successful. We know a few things behind the scenes that maybe people don't know, like when guys aren't feeling great or the fatigue level or you may not know we got in a 3AM that day. There's a lot that goes into it. It's not just trying to lose a game...lose a game?, for crying out loud.

If you sit Altuve in the next 6 days...

They're human. We treat 'em like it.

Kazmir was a 31-year old free agent-to-be who was out of baseball 3 years prior to the trade. He would not be in the same class of Archer, Gray or Quintana, all of who are signed past this year. Cole is a FA2B but (IIRC) five years younger than Kazmir.

Kazmir doesn't really comp with the pitchers reportedly (or hopefully) made available this year.
